Dark Manhattan
''Dark Manhattan'' is a black and white American film produced in 1937 by a partnership of African Americans Ralph Cooper and George Randol. Harry Fraser (director), Harry Fraser directed the film, which was written by Randol who was also the executive producer. The film was the only one made by Randol-Cooper Productions. The film opens with a dedication to R. B. Harrison, Bert Williams, and Florence Mills "and all the pioneer Negro actors who by their many sacrifices paved the way for this presentation." Music was by Ellison & Brooks (Ben Ellison and Harvey O. Brooks). Ben Rinaldo was associate producer. The film had its world premiere on January 19, 1937, at the Lincoln Theater (Los Angeles), Lincoln Theater, in the heart of L.A.'s Central Avenue Corridor. Harry Fraser (director)
Harry L. Fraser (31 March 1889 – 8 April 1974) was an American film director and screenplay writer. Biography Born in 1889 in San Francisco, Fraser directed over 80 films between 1925 and 1951, including the 1934 John Wayne film ''Randy Rides Alone'' and the Frank Buck (animal collector), Frank Buck 1937 cliffhanger serial ''Jungle Menace''. He had a small acting role in the John Wayne film '''Neath the Arizona Skies''. He also wrote screenplays. In his autobiography, Fraser described filming a scene in ''Jungle Menace'' in which a boa constrictor attacks the heroine Dorothy (Charlotte Henry). The villain has tied Dorothy hand and foot and she thrashes about wildly, terrified when she suddenly sees the huge snake: The snake was in no hurry. The race film or race movie was a genre of film produced in the United States between about 1915 and the early 1950s, consisting of films produced for African American, black audiences, and featuring black casts. Approximately five hundred race films were produced. Of these, fewer than one hundred remain. Because race films were produced outside the Cinema of the United States, Hollywood studio system, they were largely forgotten by mainstream film historians until they resurfaced in the 1980s on the Black Entertainment Television, BET cable network. In their day, race films were very popular among African-American theatergoers. Their influence continues to be felt in cinema and television marketed to African-Americans.
