Dalen
Dalen (Dutch Low Saxon: ''Daoln'') is a village and a former municipality in the northeastern Netherlands, in the province of Drenthe. Since 1998, Dalen has been part of the municipality of Coevorden. The village was first mentioned in the 12th century as "in Dalon". The etymology is unclear. Dalen is an ''esdorp'' which developed in the Early Middle Ages along the road from Coevorden to Groningen. It contains two triangular village greens. The Dutch Reformed church is an aisleless church with a tower from the 15th century. The church was damaged during the Siege of Coevorden of 1813 and rebuilt in 1824. There are many shops and restaurants, bakeries and a pub called the D'aolle Bakkerij. The village is known for its two windmills, Jan Pol and De Bente, which are open to the public. De Bente Windmill
De Bente is a smock mill in Dalen, Netherlands. It was built in 1814. The mill has been restored to full working order. It is listed as a Rijksmonument, number 44563 History De Bente was built in 1814 It replaced a mill that had been burnt down on 12 December 1813, through the actions of Cossacks attacking the France, French garrison in Coevorden. This mill was a post mill. (enter 2705 in box marked DB nr:, then click on underlined link) De Bente worked until 1944 when two sails were lost. The other pair of sails were lost in 1957. The mill was later demolished, leaving the base which was incorporated into a modern mill. Jan Pol (windmill)
Jan Pol is a smock mill in Dalen, Netherlands. It was built in 1876. The mill is a Rijksmonument, number 44562. (Click on "Technische gegevens" to view) History Jan Pol was built in 1876, replacing a mill that had been built in 1820 and burnt down following a lightning strike in 1875. It was built by millwright Schiller from Dalfsen, Overijssel. In operation until 1947, it was stripped of machinery in 1958. Restoration by millwright Huberts of Coevorden began in 1971 and was completed in 1972. Further restoration was undertaken in 1993 (Click on "Geschiedenis" to view) by millwrights Doornbosch of Adorp, Groningen. The mill is named for Jan Pol, who owned it from 1942 until his death in 1982. It is the tallest windmill standing today in Drenthe. Coevorden
Coevorden (; nds-nl, Koevern) is a city and municipality in the province of Drenthe, Netherlands. During the 1998 municipal reorganisation in the province, Coevorden merged with Dalen, Sleen, Oosterhesselen and Zweeloo, retaining its name. In August 2017, it had a population of 35,267. Etymology The name ''Coevorden'' means "cow ford(s)" or "cow crossing", similar to ''Bosporus'' or ''Oxford''. History Coevorden received city rights in 1408. It is the oldest city in the province of Drenthe. The city was captured from the Spanish in 1592 by a Dutch and English force under the command of Maurice, Prince of Orange. The following year it was besieged by a Spanish force but the city held out until its relief in May 1594. Karsten Kroon
Karsten Kroon (born 29 January 1976) is a Dutch former professional road bicycle racer who most recently rode for , a UCI ProTeam. He retired at the end of the 2014 season. Career Born in Dalen, Kroon showed his talent as an amateur by winning the professional Ronde van Drenthe in 1996. He joined the youth squad in 1997 and won a number of amateur races in two years. In 1999, he moved to the senior squad. His few wins included stage 8, on Bastille Day, of the 2002 Tour de France. Center Parcs Europe (formerly Center Parcs) is a European network of holiday villages that was founded in the Netherlands in 1968, and is currently operated by Pierre & Vacances and owned by Blackstone Group. History Dutch entrepreneur Piet Derksen started a sporting goods shop in 1953 at Lijnbaan, Rotterdam. Its name was 'Sporthuis Centrum', 'Sport House Centre'. Plopsa is the theme park division of Studio 100, the company operates 8 (water) parks across Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany and Poland. History Plopsa began its operation at the end of 1999 when Studio 100 acquired Meli Park in Adinkerke in the Municipality De Panne. After several renovations the park reopened as Plopsaland on 29 April 2000. Several attractions got a layover with Studio 100 characters, such as Kabouter Plop, Samson & Gert and Bumba. In December 2005 the company opened a new indoor theme park in the Municipality Hasselt, named Plopsa Indoor Hasselt. This marked the opening of the first indoor theme park in Belgium.
