Punggol
Punggol ( or ) is a Planning Areas of Singapore, planning area and New towns of Singapore, new town situated on the Tanjong Punggol peninsula in the North-East Region, Singapore, North-East Region of Singapore. The town directly borders Sengkang to the south and shares riverine boundaries with the planning area of Seletar, as well as Yishun to the west and Pasir Ris to the east. Bounding the town to the north and north-east is the Straits of Johor, with Coney Island, Punggol, Coney Island included as a part of the Punggol planning area. Under the Pungool 21 initiative, plans to turn the area into a new residential town were announced in 1996 and development of the town started in 1998. Due to the Asian financial crisis in 1997 and the financial troubles within the construction industry in 2003, the plan did not fully materialise. Sengkang
Sengkang (, , ) is a Planning Areas of Singapore, planning area and New towns of Singapore, residential town located in the North-East Region, Singapore, North-East Region of Singapore. The town is the second most populous in the region, being home to 249,370 residents in 2020. Sengkang shares Wiktionary:boundary, boundaries with Seletar and Punggol in the north, Pasir Ris and Paya Lebar in the east, Hougang and Serangoon to the south, as well as Yishun and Ang Mo Kio to the west. Originally a fishing village, the area underwent rapid development under the ambition of the Housing and Development Board (HDB) to transform it into a fully mature housing estate. Etymology The name ''Sengkang'' means "prosperous harbour" in Chinese, and “to chock, block or wedge” in Malay language, Malay. Punggol Group Representation Constituency
The Punggol Group Representation Constituency is a four-member Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the north-eastern region of Singapore. It consists of Punggol West SMC, as well as the Punggol Coast and Punggol Shore wards of the Pasir Ris–Punggol GRC. The current Members of Parliament are Gan Kim Yong, Janil Puthucheary, Sun Xueling and Yeo Wan Ling from the People's Action Party (PAP). History Before the 2025 general election, Punggol GRC was formed by merging the entirety of Punggol West SMC with the Punggol Coast and Punggol Shore wards of the Pasir Ris–Punggol GRC. This was done ostensibly due to population growth in Punggol, and to better reflect the geographical location of the town. The North-East Region (, zh, 東北區) of Singapore is one of the five Regions of Singapore, regions in the country. The region is the most densely populated and has the highest population among the five, with Sengkang being its most populous town as of 2020 and Seletar as the regional centre. Punggol Plaza is a shopping mall located in Punggol, Singapore, near Coral Edge LRT station. The mall is the oldest and one of the first to be built in Punggol to cater to the needs of the residents living there. It was officially opened in September 2004. Background Owned and managed by Abundance Development, Punggol Plaza was built to cater to the residents of Punggol, which was a newly built town during the completion of the mall in 2004. Janil Puthucheary
Janil Arusha Puthucheary (; born 6 November 1972) is a Malaysian-born Singaporean politician and paediatrician. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he has been serving as Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment and Ministry of Education (Singapore), Senior Minister of State for Education since 2025. Sun Xueling ( zh, s=孙雪玲, p=Sūn Xuělíng; born Soon Sher Rene; 10 July 1979) is a Singaporean politician who has been serving as Minister of State for Social and Family Development since 2020 and Minister of State for Home Affairs since 2022. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), she has been representing the Punggol West ward of Punggol Group Representation Constituency (GRC) since 2025. She had previously represented it as part of Pasir Ris–Punggol GRC from 2015 to 2020 and as Punggol West Single Member Constituency (SMC) from 2020 to 2025. Punggol Waterway Park
Punggol Waterway Park is a riverine park located in Punggol, Singapore, along Sentul Crescent. The park consists of four themed areas. Each area is designated to cater to different users of the park. History The park and "My Waterway @ Punggol" are joint agency projects between HDB and National Parks Board. The project is part of HDB's 'Remaking Our Heartland' initiatives to turn Punggol Town into a 'Waterfront Town'. The waterway is Singapore's longest man-made waterway and it runs through the park. Yeo Wan Ling ( zh, s=杨涴淩, p=Yáng Wǎnlíng; born 14 July 1976) is a Singaporean politician. Gan Kim Yong (born 9 February 1959) is a Singaporean politician who has been serving as Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore since 2024 and Minister for Trade and Industry since 2021. Designed to house up to 300,000 residents, these new towns contain areas zoned for housing, recreation and employment, and are composed of multiple neighbourhoods, each of which is further subdivided into multiple precincts.
