Pachychilon Pictum
''Pachychilon pictum'', the Albanian roach or Albanian minnow, is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish belonging to the family Leuciscidae, which includes the daces, Eurasian minnows and related species. This species is endemic to the Western Balkans and has been introduced to France and Italy. Taxonomy ''Pachychilon pictum'' was first formally described as ''Squalius pictus'' in 1858 by the Austrian ichthyologists Johann Jakob Heckel and Rudolf Kner with its type locality given as the Reka river in Montenegro. In 1882 Franz Steindachner proposed a new subgenus of ''Leuciscus'' named ''Pachychilon'' for this species, ''Pachychilon'' is now regarded as a valid genus and this species is the type species of that genus by monotypy. ''Pachychilon macedonicum'', the Macedonian roach or Macedonian moranec, is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish belonging to the family Leuciscidae, which includes the daces, Eurasian minnows and related species. This species is found in Greece and North Macedonia. Taxonomy ''Pachychilon macedonium'' was first formally described as ''Leuciscus (Leucos) macedonicus'' in 1892 by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner with its type locality given as Lake Dojran in North Macedonia. It is now classified as a valid species in the genus ''Pachychilon'' within the subfamily Leuciscinae of the family Leuciscidae. Franz Steindachner
Franz Steindachner (11 November 1834 in Vienna – 10 December 1919 in Vienna) was an Austrian zoologist, ichthyologist, and herpetologist. He published over 200 papers on fishes and over 50 papers on reptiles and amphibians. Steindachner described hundreds of new species of fish and dozens of new amphibians and reptiles. At least seven species of reptile have been named after him. Work and career Being interested in natural history, Steindachner took up the study of fossil fishes on the recommendation of his friend Eduard Suess (1831–1914). In 1860 he was appointed to the position of director of the fish collection at the Natural History Museum, Vienna, a position which had remained vacant since the death of Johann Jakob Heckel (1790–1857). Johann Jakob Heckel
Johann Jakob Heckel (23 January 1790 – 1 March 1857) was an Austrian taxidermist, zoology, zoologist, and ichthyology, ichthyologist from Mannheim in the Electoral Palatinate. He worked at the Royal natural history cabinet in Vienna which later became the Austrian Museum of Natural History. Life Heckel was born in Mannheim, the son of a namesake music teacher and Sophia née Reinhardt. He also had a namesake brother who studied music and was educated at home and lived in Vienna for a while. Another brother was Karl Ferdinand Heckel (1800-1870) who also studied music. In 1805 the family fled the French to Pressburg and then to Pest. Heckel visited the Georgicon agricultural college in 1806. Rudolf Ignaz Kner (24 August 1810 – 27 October 1869) was an Austrian geologist, paleontologist, zoologist and ichthyologist. He also wrote some poems which were published by his brother-in-law K.A. Kaltenbrunner. Biography Kner was born in Linz where his father Johann Evangelist Georg Kner (1763-1845) was a tax officer. His mother Barbara (1770-1825), daughter of forester Johann von Adlersburg was earlier married to apothecary Felix Gulielmo until his death.
