Ouaka
Ouaka is one of the 20 Prefectures of the Central African Republic, prefectures of the Central African Republic. It borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo, covers an area of 49,900 km2, and has a population of 276,710 (2003 census). In 2024, official estimates suggest the population reached 459,412 inhabitants. The prefecture is named after the Ouaka River and its capital is Bambari. Lioto
Lioto, also spelled ''Liotto'' or ''Lihoto'', is a village situated in Ouaka Prefecture, Central African Republic. History From June 2014 to March 2015, there had been 17 attacks in Lioto. The first attack occurred on 5 June 2014. The village received another attack on 2 and 14 July 2014, causing the displacement of the villagers to nearby settlements, Grimari and DR Congo. Later, they returned to the village. However, an armed group attacked the Fulani militia in Lioto in October 2014, causing 60 people to be killed and more than one hundred injured. During the attack, several houses were torched and the village was looted. Anti-balaka was alleged to be the attacker, yet the local group commander denied it. An armed group from Zouhougou attacked Lioto on 10 February 2015 and houses were reported burned. Bakala (Central African Republic)
Bakala is a sub-prefecture and town in the Ouaka Prefecture of the southern-central Central African Republic. It is located near the geographic center of the country. Batobadja
Batobadja is a village situated in Ouaka Prefecture, Central African Republic. History An armed group invaded Batobadja on 21 and 22 September 2014 and pillaged the health center’s pharmacy, causing the death of one person. An armed Peuhl militia killed 21 people in Batobadja in the second week of October 2014. Bambari
Bambari is a town in the Central African Republic, lying on the Ouaka River. It has a population of 41,356 (2003 census) and is the capital of Ouaka prefecture. Bambari is an important market town and home to Bambari Airport, and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bambari. History Bambari was electrified in 1970. On 23 December 2012 Bambari was captured by rebels from Séléka coalition. On 24 June 2014 100 Anti-balaka fighters attacked Bambari. 46 people were killed and 28 wounded. Digui
Digui is a village located in Ouaka Prefecture, Central African Republic. The village is strategic since it is situated at the crossroads to Bambari, Alindao, and Ngakobo. History The rebel group UPC used to control Digui and established a base in the village. The Portuguese contingent of MINUSCA clashed with UPC on 13 January 2019. MINUSCA and FACA forces captured Digui on 1 February 2020 from UPC. UPC rebels attacked FACA checkpoints in Digui on 22 May 2023 and casualties were reported. A clash between FACA and Wagner Group militia ensued in Digui on 9 January 2023, resulting in the death of 4 FACA soldiers and three Wagner militiamen. Grimari
Grimari is a city located in the Ouaka prefecture in Central African Republic, approximately away from the capital, Bangui. The politician Abel Goumba was born in Grimari. History On March 1, 1910, Grimari replaced Pouyamba as the capital of the subdivision in the district of Kémo. This subdivision was attached to the constituency of Bambari from 1 January 1920. In 1930, the African Textile Company set up a ginning factory, this cotton company would become Cotonaf. After World War II, the administrative reform of October 16, 1946, made Grimari the district capital of the Ouaka-Kotto region. On January 23, 1961, the independent Central African Republic established the city of Grimari as the capital of the sub-prefecture. Ippy
Ippy is a town located in the Central African Republic prefecture of Ouaka, near the geographic center of the country. It is 364 kilometers (226 miles) from the city of Bangui directly. Driving distance, however, is 496 kilometers (308 miles). Ippy has a car rental service which is popular among tourists visiting the town. History The Ippy Hospital was founded by American missionary Margaret Nicholl Laird with facilities including 60 beds, two operating theaters and a 1,000 English-language medical textbook library. Kouango
