Derby (football)
A sports rivalry is intense competition between athletic teams or athletes, affecting participants, management, and supporters all to varying degrees. One of the first known sports rivalries occurred in the Roman Empire between the Blues and the Greens, and the minor teams of the Reds and Whites, each of which were chariot racing clubs competing at the Hippodrome in Constantinople. The rivalry took on political tones as well, coming close to deposing the Roman Emperor Justinian in 532 CE in a riot and the suppression of the riot killed tens of thousands of people. Owners have been known to encourage rivalries as they tend to improve game attendance and television ratings for rivalry matches. Clubs can reduce fan aggression surrounding rivalry games by acknowledging rather than downplaying the conflict because the rivalry is an integral part of fan identity. Games between two rivals that are based in areas of close geographical proximity are often known as a local derby, or si ...

Floriana–Valletta Rivalry
The rivalry between Valletta F.C. and Floriana F.C. is a notable one in Maltese football as both clubs are recognised for having great history and traditions, and moreover, the respective localities of Valletta, the capital city of Malta and Floriana, its immediate suburb, are adjacent to each other. The rivalry is characterised by a tight head-to-head tally in terms of the Maltese Premier League, with Valletta having won 25 competitions, and Floriana having won 26. In 1922, a Floriana gang had pulled a tram off its tracks, overturned it and attacked the Valletta fans inside with stones, which led to The Malta Police Force re-routing traffic of Valletta fans away from the main streets of Floriana upon returning from the stadium ever since. Floriana are known ...

Football Hooliganism
Football hooliganism, also known as soccer hooliganism, football rioting or soccer rioting, constitutes violence and other destructive behaviors perpetrated by spectators at association football events. Football hooliganism typically involves conflict between pseudo-tribes, formed to intimidate and attack supporters of other teams. Certain clubs have long-standing rivalries with other clubs and hooliganism associated with matches between them (sometimes called Local derby, local derbies) can be more severe. Conflict may arise at any point, before, during or after matches and occasionally outside of game situations. Participants often select locations away from stadiums to avoid arrest by the police, but conflict can also erupt spontaneously inside the stadium or in the surrounding streets. In extreme cases, hooligans, police and bystanders have been killed, and riot police have intervened. Hooligan-led violence has been called "aggro" (short for "aggression") and "bovver" (the C ...

Maltese Football
Football in Malta is run by the Malta Football Association and was introduced to Malta during British rule in the mid-19th century. The sport at the time was new to England, and was used as a means of entertainment for the soldiers stationed in Malta at the various barracks around Malta at the time. The association runs the men's national football team, the women's national team, as well as administering the semi-professional Maltese Premier League, Maltese Women's League and the respective cups for club sides. History The first Maltese championship in the 1909-1910 season was won by Floriana. The league regularly changed in numbers as teams changed administrators, dropped out of the league, and new teams re-entered. Up until the season ...
