Cyro Garcia
Cyro Garcia (born 26 October 1954) is a Brazilian former banker, historian, teacher, socialist activist, and politician. A long time member of the United Socialist Workers' Party (PSTU), he served as a federal deputy from the state of Rio de Janeiro from 1992 to 1993. Biography Garcia was born on 26 October 1954 in Manhumirim, in the state of Minas Gerais, to Josias Garcia da Silva and Donatilla de Souza Garcia. He graduated with a law degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro Faculty of Law. He later earned his master's degree and doctorate in history from Fluminense Federal University. Garcia was one of the founding members of the Workers' Party (PT) and the Central Única dos Trabalhadores (CUT), where he helped to direct both during the 1980s, and later led the Banker's Union of Rio de Janeiro. Dayse Oliveira (born 31 May 1966, Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian educator and socialist activist, active within the Black rights movement in Rio de Janeiro. She was the vice-presidential candidate for the United Socialist Workers' Party (PSTU) in 2002, with José Maria de Almeida as the presidential candidate. Oliveira was initially an activist within the Workers' Party (PT), having affiliations with the Brazilian trotskyist organization and then-affiliate of the PT . After the Socialist Convergence was expelled from the party apparatus for supporting the ''Fora Collor'' movement to impeach former president Fernando Collor, to the extent of calling for new presidential elections and running against the will of the larger PT, Oliveira joined the PSTU. The Fourth International (FI) was a political international established in France in 1938 by Leon Trotsky and his supporters, having been expelled from the Soviet Union and the Communist International (also known as Comintern or the Third International). There is no longer a single, centralized cohesive Fourth International. The International Workers League (Fourth International) (, or LITci; , or LIT-QI), also known as IWLfi, is a Morenist Trotskyist international organisation. Overview The group's origins lie in the International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI). Moreno's supporters followed the American Socialist Workers Party in leaving the ICFI in 1963 to form the reunified Fourth International (USFI). In 1969, the USFI voted to support guerrilla war in Latin America. Moreno's group opposed this. While critical of the Sandinistas, Moreno's group sent a Simon Bolivar Brigade to Nicaragua to aid the Civil War, with the aim of building a revolutionary party there. The 2024 Rio de Janeiro municipal election took place on 6 October 2024. Voters elected a mayor, vice mayor, and 51 city council members. The incumbent mayor, Eduardo Paes of the Social Democratic Party (Brazil, 2011), Social Democratic Party (PSD), was reelected with his second term to begin on 1 January 2025 and end on 31 December 2028.
