2024 Rio De Janeiro Mayoral Election
The 2024 Rio de Janeiro municipal election took place on 6 October 2024. Voters elected a mayor, vice mayor, and 51 city council members. The incumbent mayor, Eduardo Paes of the Social Democratic Party (Brazil, 2011), Social Democratic Party (PSD), was reelected with his second term to begin on 1 January 2025 and end on 31 December 2028. Background 2020 election The last mayoral election in Rio de Janeiro, held in 2020, resulted in a largest victory of Eduardo Paes (DEM) in the second round. Paes obtained 1,629,319 votes (64.07% of the valid votes), while his opponent and former mayor Marcelo Crivella obtained 913,700 votes (or circa of 35.93% of the valid votes). Crivella attempted his own re-election and lost by a difference of 28 points. An opinion poll conducted by Paraná Pesquisas in November 2023 asked Rio's citizens what they thought of Paes' government. Eduardo Paes
Eduardo da Costa Paes (, born 14 November 1969) is a Brazilian politician who became the mayor of Rio de Janeiro from 2009 to 2012, reelected for a second term from 2013 to 2016 and a third in 2021. He is the city's 13th mayor. On 12 August, at the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony, he took the Olympic Flag, via Jacques Rogge, from London Mayor Boris Johnson. Paes was a trenchant critic of the Lula administration, particularly during the Mensalão scandal in 2005 over alleged payments to congresspeople for votes. Cyro Garcia (born 26 October 1954) is a Brazilian former banker, historian, teacher, socialist activist, and politician. A long time member of the United Socialist Workers' Party (PSTU), he served as a federal deputy from the state of Rio de Janeiro from 1992 to 1993. Biography Garcia was born on 26 October 1954 in Manhumirim, in the state of Minas Gerais, to Josias Garcia da Silva and Donatilla de Souza Garcia. He graduated with a law degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro Faculty of Law. He later earned his master's degree and doctorate in history from Fluminense Federal University.
