Cuthbert, Texas
Cuthbert is a ghost town in Mitchell County, Texas, United States. Cuthbert was established in 1890 when the founder D. T. Bozeman built a wagon yard and store. The community and post office were named for Thomas Cuthbertson, a family friend of the Bozemans. By the early 1920s, Cuthbert had a church, two stores, a blacksmith shop, a cotton gin, telephone office, and a school. In 1920, the T. and P. Abrams No. 1 oil well, one of the first commercial oil ventures in the Permian Basin, was drilled just over a mile north of the town. A post office, two businesses, and a population of twenty-five were reported at the community in 1936, the year that its school was consolidated with that of Colorado City. After World War II, the improvement of rural roads in the area led to Cuthbert's decline as it lost its trade to Colorado City. Mitchell County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 8,990. Its county seat is Colorado City. The county was created in 1876 and organized in 1881. It is named for Asa and Eli Mitchell, two early settlers and soldiers in the Texas Revolution. The Llano Estacado (), sometimes translated into English as the Staked Plains, is a region in the Southwestern United States that encompasses parts of eastern New Mexico and northwestern Texas. The Permian Basin is a large sedimentary basin in the southwestern part of the United States. The basin contains the Mid-continent oil field province. This sedimentary basin is located in western Texas and southeastern New Mexico. It reaches from just south of Lubbock, past Midland and Odessa, south nearly to the Rio Grande River in southern West Central Texas, and extending westward into the southeastern part of New Mexico. Texas State Highway 350
Texas State Highway 350 (SH 350) begins in Big Spring and runs in a mostly northeastward direction to Snyder. Route description Beginning at a junction with Business Loop I-20 at Big Spring in Howard County, SH 350 intersects Interstate 20 on the northern edge of the town. The highway is known as Owen Street in Big Spring. SH 350 then runs northeast past Howard County municipal airport to its final junction with US 180 at Snyder in Scurry County, where it is known as College Avenue. The route traverses Howard, Mitchell and Scurry Counties. Except for the portions in Big Spring and Snyder, most of the terrain covered by the highway is lightly populated agricultural and oil country. The route has remained essentially unchanged since its original designation on August 23, 1943. Ira is an unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Scurry County, Texas, Scurry County, Texas, United States. It lies in the southwestern corner of the county at the junction of Texas State Highway 350, State Highway 350 and Farm to Market Road 1606, 10 miles southwest of Snyder, Texas, Snyder, and has an estimated population of 250. History Ira's history began sometime in the early 1890s, when Ira Green established a general store in the area. Green's store became a meeting point for the stagecoach and mail route, and a community began to spring up. A school opened in 1893, and Ira Green became postmaster when the community's post office was activated three years later. After reaching its peak in the early 20th century, Ira survived a period of economic downturn in Scurry County, and in 1980 was reportedly home to 485 residents.
