Cunningham C-1
The Cunningham C-1 is a sports car that was designed and built by the B. S. Cunningham Company in 1950. Background American sportsman Briggs Cunningham entered two cars based on the Cadillac Series 61 in the 1950 24 Hours of Le Mans. Brothers Cowles "Miles" Collier and Sam Collier partnered to drive a lightly modified car nicknamed "Petit Pataud", and finished in tenth place. Cunningham and co-driver Phil Walters were in another car with fully custom bodywork, dubbed "Le Monstre", and finished one place behind the other Cadillac in eleventh place. In preparation for his next attempt at Le Mans, Cunningham bought the Frick-Tappett Motors company. The operation was moved from Long Island, New York to West Palm Beach, Florida, and renamed the "B. Phil Walters
Philip F. Walters (April 20, 1916 – February 6, 2000) was an American racing driver, who won both the 12 Hours of Sebring and Watkins Glen Grand Prix twice. Early career Walters was born in New York City and grew up in Manhasset, New York, and in his late teens began racing midgets at tracks on Long Island. He races under a pseudonym - "Ted Tappett" – so that his family did not know he was racing. By all accounts, Walters’s style was brute-force, all-arms-and-elbows sort of oval racer. The War Years It was January 1942 when he joined the United States Army Air Corps, as a transport and glider pilot. He flew a Waco CG-4A glider during a disastrous invasion of the Netherlands, which the Germans knew of in advance. He was able to safely land his troops although he was wounded, and taken prisoner. John Fitch (racing Driver)
John Cooper Fitch (August 4, 1917 in Indianapolis, Indiana – October 31, 2012) was an American racing driver and inventor. He was the first American to race automobiles successfully in Europe in the post-war era. In the course of a driving career which spanned 18 years, Fitch won such notable sports car races as the Gran Premio de Eva Duarte Perón – Sport, 1953 12 Hours of Sebring, 1955 Mille Miglia (production car class), and the 1955 RAC Tourist Trophy, as well as numerous SCCA National Sports Car Championship races. He was also involved in Briggs Cunningham's ambitious Le Mans projects in the early 1950s, and was later a member of the Mercedes-Benz sport car team. Equinox Mountain is a mountain in Bennington County, Vermont, United States, in the town of Manchester. The mountain is the highest peak of the Taconic Range, and the highest point of Bennington County. Wire wheels, wire-spoked wheels, tension-spoked wheels, or "suspension" wheels are wheels whose rims connect to their hubs by wire spokes. Although these wires are generally stiffer than a typical wire rope, they function mechanically the same as tensioned flexible wires, keeping the rim true while supporting applied loads. A centerlock wheel is a type of automobile wheel in which the wheel is fastened to the axle using a single, central nut, instead of the more common ring of 4 or 5 lug nuts or bolts. History The centerlock wheel and hub system was first introduced by Rudge-Whitworth in the early 1900s, for use in automobile wire wheels. Initially called "QD" (for "quickly disconnectable") the basic mechanism for "knock-off" style centerlock hubs was patented by 1908. It was quickly adopted by auto manufacturers and racers. De Dion rear axle A de Dion tube is a form of non- independent automobile suspension. It is a considerable improvement over the swing axle, Hotchkiss drive, or live axle. Sam Collier
Samuel Carnes Collier (May 14, 1912 – September 23, 1950) was an American advertising entrepreneur and auto racer. He made his fortune in streetcar advertising. Family Collier was the son of Barron Gift Collier and Juliet Gordon Carnes, the founders of Collier County, Florida. He had two brothers, (Cowles) Miles Collier and Baron Collier Jr. He married Dixie Thompson from Honolulu in 1936. Together they had three children, Samuel Carnes Collier Jr., Terry Collier and Richard Collier. Career As a teenager Collier completed three seasons as a designer, proprietor, and manager of the Overlook Theatre, in Pocantico Hills, New York.
