Cradley Heath Cubs
Cradley Heathens were a motorcycle speedway team from Dudley, England. The team was founded in 1947 and competed primarily at the top level of British speedway at Dudley Wood Stadium until its closure in 1995. The team was revived as Dudley Heathens in 2010, competing in the National League, reverting to the Cradley Heathens name in 2013 but ceased operating after the 2019 season. History Origins & 1940s In 1917, Cradley Heath St Lukes Football Club found farmland that was suitable for a pitch and constructed a basic football ground and stadium east of the Dudley Wood Road. Due to financial issues, members of the club formed Cradley Sports Enterprise, who constructed speedway and greyhound tracks around the pitch. British League
The British League was the main motorcycle speedway league in Britain from its formation in 1965 until 1995 when British speedway was restructured. It initially had a single division, with a British League Division Two, second division starting in 1968 (which was renamed the New National League in 1975 and subsequently the National League). The British League was formed in 1965 following the merger of the National League (1932–1964), National League and the Provincial League (speedway), Provincial League. Matches were held over a series of races, with two riders from each team taking part in each race. In 1995 it was replaced by the Premier League (speedway), Premier League for two years before the sport was restructured into three tiers with the formation of the Elite League (speedway), Elite League in 1997. Newcastle Diamonds were a motorcycle speedway team that raced in the British speedway leagues from 1929 to 2022. They were based at Newcastle Stadium on the Fossway, Byker. The Stadium was previously known as Brough Park. History Origins and 1930s The construction of a speedway track at Brough Park began in early 1929, under the supervision of Lindon Travers. The Newcastle team were inaugural members of the 1929 Speedway English Dirt Track League and following an open meeting on 17 May, the first league home fixture was held three days later on 20 May against Halifax Speedway. The team finished in fourth place during their debut season. In 1930, both Brough Park and Gosforth speedway (the latter promoted by Tyneside Speedways Ltd) intended to compete in the Northern League but Gosforth signed the majority of Brough Park's riders and then Brough Park speedway closed. Harry Bastable
Henry Bastable (30 August 1928 – 5 September 2021) was an international motorcycle speedway rider and promoter from England. Career summary Bastable was a novice at the Alan Hunt (speedway rider), Alan Hunt 1949 winter training school when he was signed up by Cradley Heathens, Cradley Heath Heathens. For experience he was loaned to the 3rd Division National League (1932–1964), National League Tamworth Hounds speedway club for the 1950 season, with occasional rides at reserve for 2nd Division Cradley. He returned full-time to Cradley Heath in 1951 and in 1952 was the Heathens' top scorer. Ivor Brown (speedway Rider)
Ivor John Brown (30 May 1927 – 30 March 2005) was a motorcycle speedway rider from England. He was the captain of Cradley Heathens speedway team during the 1960s. He earned one international cap for the England national speedway team. After retiring from riding he became promoter of Long Eaton and Scunthorpe speedway. His off-track occupation was postmaster and grocer of the village General Stores in Wymeswold. Career Racing Born in Wymeswold, Leicestershire, Ivor Brown started speedway racing at Long Eaton in 1952, following earlier grasstrack riding, and moved to second-half rides at Birmingham and then Leicester. The Edinburgh Monarchs are a Scottish speedway team based in Armadale. They compete in the SGB Championship, racing on Friday nights during the speedway season. The club is run by a board of directors, chaired by Alex Harkess and also runs a National Development League team called the Monarchs Academy. History Origins Speedway in Edinburgh began on 19 May 1928, with an open meeting organised by the Scottish Dirt Track Motor Racing Club at Marine Gardens in Portobello. Speedway Provincial League
The Provincial League was a league competition for speedway teams in the United Kingdom. The Provincial League created as a breakaway league from the National League and continued for five seasons between 1960 and 1964. History The 'Provincial League' name had previously been used for the second tier of the National League in the 1930s, although the name was dropped after two seasons, when it was renamed to National League Division Two. The new Provincial League was formed in the winter of 1959/60, when a group of promoters dissatisfied with the declining National League decided to form a breakaway league. Eastbourne Eagles
The Eastbourne Eagles were a British motorcycle speedway team, based at Arlington Stadium, near Eastbourne, England. They were founded in 1929 and are two times champions of Britain in 1995 and 2000. The team last raced on 31 July 2021. History Origins & 1930s During 1928 the Eastbourne Motorcycle Sports Club purchased a field in Arlington for the purposes of dirt track racing. Practice sessions took place before the official opening on 5 August 1929 by the Arlington Motor Sports Club. Over the following years the race meetings continued at regular intervals but there was still no team formed to compete in the British league system. However the Hailsham Cup was the main prize available and large attendances frequented the track. In 1937, George Newton broke the track record, which lasted until 1955. Wombwell Colliers
Wombwell Colliers were a British motorcycle speedway team who operated between 1929 and 1965 based at the South Yorkshire Sports Stadium, Station Road, Wombwell, near Barnsley, England. History In 1928 the new sport known as dirt track arrived from Australia and the following year in February 1929, two speedway dirt tracks were laid out in Wombwell within 200 yards of each other. The first by the Darfield and District Motorcycle Club, on an old coursing field, off Ings Road, New Scarborough and the other at the greyhound racing stadium known as the South Yorkshire Sports Stadium. The Ings Road track lasted one year and only held open meetings in 1929. The South Yorkshire Sports Stadium opened on 9 May 1929 and 8,000 people saw New Zealand rider Smokey Stratton open the track with a demonstration ride.
