Corofin GAA (Galway)
Corofin GAA is a Gaelic football club based in Corofin, County Galway, Ireland. It is a member of the Galway branch of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). The club serves the two parishes of Cummer and Kilmoylan and the village of Belclare. Corofin are the 2019–20 All-Ireland Club Champions, after winning their third-successive All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship final by defeating Kilcoo of Down in January 2020. History The club has had a long association with the GAA dating back as far as its inception. Corofin born and long time local parish priest, Dr Patrick Duggan, who was then Bishop of Clonfert was Michael Cusack's first choice to be the clerical patron of the new association in 1884. However, the Bishop (then 71 years of age) declined the invitation on health grounds, and directed the delegation to the more youthful Dr Croke the Archbishop of Cashel. Gaelic football (; short name '')'', commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA, or football, is an Irish team sport. A form of football, it is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or palming the ball into the other team's Goal (sport), goal (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goal and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the ball up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar, signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. Paul McGettigan
Paul McGettigan (born 1957/8) is a former Gaelic footballer, manager and barrister. He played inter-county football for Donegal and Galway. His club career included time with Donegal club St Eunan's and Galway clubs Salthill, St Grellan's and Corofin. He played in midfield. Early life and education McGettigan was born to footballer James "Gouldie" McGettigan and his wife Cora (''née'' Embleton). He was one of four daughters and seven sons (including fellow Donegal footballer Leslie). One of McGettigan's brothers died at the age of sixteen in 1986 and another at the age of forty in 2009. McGettigan attended Gormanston College in East Meath. With them he was part of the 1973 All-Ireland Hogan Cup winning team that saw off St Jarlath's College of Tuam in the final. Ian Burke
Ian Burke is a Gaelic footballer from Corofin, County Galway, who played at senior level for the Galway county team. In November 2018, Burke won an All-Star award. It was Galway's first football All-Star since 2003. Career Burke plays his club Gaelic football for Corofin. He based his style of play upon his small height, utilising quick passes and fast movement. He played in their unsuccessful Galway Senior Football Championship campaign in 2012 but became an ever present member of the Corofin team that went on to win seven Galway SFCs in a row. Daithí Burke
Daithí Burke (born 16 November 1992) is an Irish hurler and Gaelic footballer who plays at senior level for the Galway county hurling team and for his clubs Turloughmore and Corofin. Burke made his debut for Galway against Laois, and was part of the team that reached the 2015 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final after defeating Tipperary in the semi-final. On 3 September 2017, Burke started at full-back for Galway as they won their first All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship in 29 years against Waterford. He has also played for NUI Galway. Kieran Fitzgerald (born 1 January 1981) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played for Corofin between 1998 and 2020 and for the Galway county team between 2000 and 2011. Fitzgerald won an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship medal in 2001. That year he also received an All Star He was named Galway captain in 2007, and made his International Rules Series debut in 2006. Fitzgerald dated Mairéad Meehan, a sister of the Galway inter-county footballers Declan, Michael, Noel and Tomás Meehan. The 2019 Galway Senior Football Championship is the 124th edition of Galway GAA's premier Gaelic football tournament for senior graded clubs in County Galway, Ireland. The winners receive the Frank Fox Cup and represent Galway in the Connacht Senior Club Football Championship. Eighteen teams compete. This year there will be a new format once again. The 2018 Galway Senior Football Championship is the 123rd edition of Galway GAA's premier Gaelic football tournament for senior graded clubs in County Galway, Ireland. The winners receive the Frank Fox Cup and represent Galway in the Connacht Senior Club Football Championship. Twenty teams compete. This year there will be a new format. With the previous years 4 semi finalists being seeded and separated into 4 groups of 5 Corofin were the defending champions after they defeated Mountbellew/Moylough in the 2017 final. This was Claregalways's return the senior grade after a 4 year exodus (they were relegated from the S.F.C. in 2013) when claiming the 2017 I.F.C. title. The 2017 Galway Senior Football Championship is the 122nd edition of Galway GAA's premier Gaelic football tournament for senior graded clubs in County Galway, Ireland. The winners receive the Frank Fox Cup and represent Galway in the Connacht Senior Club Football Championship. Twenty teams compete. The championship has a back-door format for the first two rounds before proceeding to a knock-out format. Generally, any team to lose two matches will be knocked out of the championship.
