The Copa Uruguay (officially Copa AUF Uruguay) is a knockout football competition in men's domestic Uruguayan football, starting in 2022. The competition starts in June, with the winner of the cup qualifying for the following year's Supercopa Uruguaya, starting from the 2024 edition. History Historically, Uruguayan football never had a national cup tournament, aside from a competition called ''Torneo de Copa'', which happened only in 1969. In 2018, teams started to mobilize in favour of the creation of a national cup, but nothing came of it. On 20 April 2022, the Uruguayan Football Association announced the creation of the ''Copa AUF Uruguay'', being approved by several clubs involved. The first edition of the competition, which was played from 22 June to 13 November 2022, was won by Defensor Sporting who defeated La Luz in the final. Montevideo City Torque is a Uruguayan football club based in Montevideo. The club currently plays in the Uruguayan Primera División, the first division of Uruguayan league system, having achieved promotion to the Primera División for the first time ahead of the 2018 season. Segunda División Profesional is the second division of professional football in Uruguay, established in 1942. The league is sometimes referred to as ''Primera B''. Segunda División was first held in 1942 to replace amateur Divisional Intermedia, establishing a professional league for lower divisions in Uruguay. The most successful clubs are Fénix and Sud América with seven titles and the current champion is Albion. 2022 Copa Uruguay
The 2022 Copa Uruguay (officially known as Copa AUF Uruguay 2022), was the first edition of the Copa Uruguay, the country's national football cup tournament. The tournament began on 22 June and ended on 13 November, and had 76 teams participating. Defensor Sporting were the first winners of the competition, defeating La Luz in the final match 1–0. Format The competition was divided into two stages: a preliminary stage and the national stage. In the preliminary stage, teams from the amateur lower leagues competed for 20 berths to the national stage. In the first phase of the national stage, 28 teams from the Primera División Amateur and Segunda División entered the competition, for a total of 48 teams which are divided into 24 ties, with the winners qualifying for the second round.
