Consejos Populares
In Cuba, a consejo popular (; ; sometimes shortened to CP) is an electoral ward or political-administrative demarcation of the National Assembly of People's Power of Cuba. They were created in 1988. 474 wards had been created as of 2023, with them changing frequently. They function as subdivisions, under municipalities. Under the wards are districts. All wards have at least 5 districts, with urban areas having more and rural areas having less. Most rural wards include 1 major town or village (usually with a population of 700-3,000 at least) with a few hamlets, while urban areas (usually municipal seat) are usually split into wards, named for the city with a I, II and sometimes III, and IV and so forth appended. Sometimes when only two wards are present in a city, they are split into "Norte" (or north) and "Sur" (or south). Consejo is a village in the north of Corozal District, Belize. Consejo is located on a point of land where the bays of Corozal and Chetumal meet. Cascajal
Cascajal is a Cuban village and ''consejo popular'' (ward) of the municipality of Santo Domingo, in Villa Clara Province. With a 2012 population of 5,915, it is the most populated municipal settlement after Santo Domingo. History The village was founded in 1847, during the construction of the Central Railway (''Ferrocarril Central''), connecting Havana to Santiago de Cuba. Geography Cascajal lies west of its province, at the borders with the municipality of Los Arabos, in Matanzas Province, between Mayabón (7 km west) and Mordazo (9 km east). Santo Domingo is a municipality and town in the Villa Clara Province of Cuba. It was founded in 1819 and established as a municipality in 1879. Geography The town is divided into the wards (''barrios'') of Este (east) and Oeste (west). Santa Clara is the capital city of the Cuban province of Villa Clara. It is centrally located in the province and Cuba. Santa Clara is the fifth-most populous Cuban city, with a population of nearly 245,959. History Santa Clara was founded by 175 people on 15 July 1689. 138 of them represented two large families already living in the area, who owned land next to the new city. The other 37 came from seven other families and included a priest and governor, all originating in the coastal city of San Juan de los Remedios. The population of Remedios had to choose between leaving their city, constantly being besieged by pirates, or staying. While most decided to stay, 37 people traveled south to the interior. On 1 June 1689, they arrived at a hill, joining two other families already present at the site. According to tradition, a mass was celebrated under a tamarind tree and Santa Clara was founded.
