Colt–Shanahoe GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in the village of Raheen, County Laois, Ireland. The club is primarily concerned with the game of hurling. History Located in the parish of Raheen just outside Abbeyleix, County Laois, Colt–Shanahoe GAA Club was founded following an amalgamation between the existing St Fintan's, Colt and Shanahoe clubs in 2020. Gaelic Athletic Association
The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sports, amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball, and GAA rounders. Raheen, County Laois
Raheen () is a small village south of Portlaoise in County Laois, Ireland. History The Gothic revival Roman Catholic parish church of Raheen is dedicated to St. Fintan and dates from 1857. The first Catholic church, a thatched chapel, was built in 1729 on a site granted by a Protestant family named Baldwin. Mr. Baldwin granted the land after seeing poor Catholics assembled at Mass in a deep pit, which is called the ''Mass Pit'' even to the present time. The graveyard in the village marks the site of the old thatched chapel. Education There is one primary school, Tobar an Léinn, located in the area. County Laois ( ; ) is a county in Ireland. It is part of the Eastern and Midland Region and in the province of Leinster. It was known as Queen's County from 1556 to 1922. Hurling (, ') is an outdoor Team sport, team game of ancient Gaelic culture, Gaelic Irish origin, played by men and women. Abbeyleix
Abbeyleix (; ) is a town in County Laois, Ireland, located around south of the county town of Portlaoise. Abbelyleix is in a civil parish of the same name. Abbeyleix was formerly located on the N8, the main road from Dublin to Cork. At one point, up to 15,000 vehicles passed along the town's main street every day. Since May 2010, however, the town has been bypassed by the M8 motorway, with the former N8 consequently downgraded to the N77 national secondary road, and R639 regional road. Abbeyleix was named Ireland's Tidiest Town in 2023. St Fintan's, Colt GAA
Colt GAA is a Gaelic football and hurling club in County Laois, Ireland. The club is located in the parish of Raheen and amalgamates with Shanahoe GAA and Clonad GAA to play underage football and hurling. Since 2020 it amalgamated with Shanahoe to play hurling in the Laois Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship but later relegated to Intermediate Championship 2021. The club has never won the Laois Senior Hurling Championship but won the Laois Intermediate Hurling Championship four times in 1965, 1971, 1979 and 2008. The club won the division 2 league in 2010 & Senior B Hurling League 2013 Colt has also won the Laois Junior Hurling Championship twice in 1959 and 1996. Shanahoe GAA
Shanahoe GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association hurling and gaelic football club in the village of Shanahoe, County Laois, Ireland, with pitches about two kilometres away. The club is located in the parish of Raheen. The club colours are red and black. Since 2020 it amalgamated with Colt to play hurling as Colt–Shanahoe. Since 2020 football is the way Shanahoe is now represented. History The current club was founded as recently as 1980 and is located in the parish of Raheen, County Laois. An older Shanahoe hurling club won the Laois Intermediate Hurling Championship back in 1951, having won the Laois Junior Hurling Championship three years previously. In 1999, the current Shanahoe club enjoyed its most memorable day when Declan Cuddy captained them to a 4–7 to 0–6 win over Ballypickas in the Laois Junior Hurling Championship final. Laois Intermediate Hurling Championship
The Laois Intermediate Hurling Championship (abbreviated to the Laois IHC) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Laois County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association for the third tier hurling teams in the county of Laois in Ireland. In its current format, the Laois Intermediate Championship begins with a group stage in mid-summer. The eight participating teams are divided into two groups of four and play each other in a round-robin system. The three top-ranking teams in each group proceed to the knockout phase that culminates with the final match at O'Moore Park. The title has been won by 35 different clubs, 26 of which have won the title more than once. Clonaslee is the most successful team in the tournament's history, having won it eight times. Trumera GAA
Trumera GAA is a hurling and Gaelic football club in County Laois, Ireland. History The present Trumera GAA Club was formed at a meeting in Trumera National School in winter 1968. An earlier version of Trumera was set up at a gathering of interested people in the 1920s. The team reached a county Junior semi-final against Mountmellick in 1927. They lost that game and the team faded out soon afterwards. All through the seventies and eighties the club competed in the Laois Junior Hurling Championship without any great success. The nineties brought a change of fortune with the club reaching its first league final in 1990.
