Name The name Colombes comes from Latin ''columna'' (Old French ''colombe''), meaning "column". This is interpreted as referring either to a megalith, megalithic column used in ancient times by a druid, druidic cult which stood in Colombes until its destruction during the French Revolution, or to the columns of an Atrium (architecture), atrium in a ruined Gallo-Roman culture, Gallo-Roman Roman villa, villa that also stood in Colombes. La Garenne-Colombes () is a Communes of France, commune in the northwestern suburbs of Paris, France. It is located from Notre Dame de Paris, France's kilometre zero. Name The commune used to be part of the neighbouring city of Colombes. At this time, before 1910, it was called ''La Garenne de Colombes'', literally "the warren of doves". The explanation for the city being called "warren" is that it used to be a warren where people would hunt. But this dates back to the French monarchy, in the 18th century and before. The (, ''City Hall'') is a municipal building in Colombes, Hauts-de-Seine, in the northwest suburbs of Paris, France, standing on Place de la République. It has been included on the '' Inventaire général des monuments'' by the French Ministry of Culture since 1991. History In the mid-19th century, the town council decided to commission a town hall on a site at No. 13 Rue de Paris (now Avenue Henri Barbusse). The building was designed in the neoclassical style, built in ashlar stone and was completed around 1850. The design involved a symmetrical main frontage of just three bays facing onto Rue de Paris. An extra storey was added in the late 19th century. Internally, there were municipal offices on the ground floor, a council chamber on the first floor and a caretaker's flat on the second floor. The repression of January and February 1894 was an episode of the Ère des attentats (1892–1894), during which France engaged in significant Political repression, state repression against Anarchism, anarchists. The passage of the lois scélérates ('villainous laws') in December 1893, following the National Assembly bombing, granted French political and police authorities extensive powers to combat anarchists. Using these laws, they launched a large-scale crackdown, employing both legal and extra-legal means to achieve their goals. Thousands of raids and arrests were carried out across France, including its French Algeria, colonies, anarchist newspapers were banned, and a nationwide 'manhunt for anarchists' was declared. The execution of Auguste Vaillant on 5 February 1894—after president Sadi Carnot (statesman), Sadi Carnot refused to grant him his pardon—was a defining moment of this repression.
