Cle Elum River
The Cle Elum River is a tributary of the Yakima River, approximately 28 miles (45 km) long in the U.S. state of Washington. A Northern Pacific Railway station at the future site of the city of Cle Elum, Washington was named Clealum after the Kittitas name Tie-el-Lum, meaning "swift water", referring to the Cle Elum River. In 1908, Clealum was altered to Cle Elum. This spelling came to be used for the river as well. Some maps in the 1850s also have the river labeled as ''Samahma'' River. Course The river originates in the Cascade Range near Mount Daniel and flows generally south, through Hyas Lake. The river is joined by many tributary streams including Waptus River and Cooper River draining from Cooper Lake, after which it enters Cle Elum Lake. Cle Elum Lake
Cle Elum Lake is a lake and reservoir along the course of the Cle Elum River, in Washington state USA. At the site of the future city of Cle Elum, Washington, a Northern Pacific Railway station was named Clealum after the Kittitas name Tle-el-Lum (tlielləm), meaning "swift water", referring to the Cle Elum River. Kittitas (tribe)
The Kittitas (Sahaptin language, Sahaptin: , ; also known as the Upper Yakama) are a Sahaptin tribe closely related to the Yakama, sometimes described as a band or subtribe of the Yakama. Their traditional territories are found within Kittitas County, Washington, Kittitas and Yakima County, Washington, Yakima counties within Washington (state), Washington state, chiefly in the Kittitas Valley, Naches River, Naches Valley, Wenas Valley, and upper Yakima River, Yakima Valley. Individuals of Kittitas descent are today enrolled in the Yakama Indian Reservation, Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakima and the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, but the Kittitas are not recognized as a distinct band by either tribal government. Cooper Lake (Washington)
Cooper Lake is an alpine freshwater lake located on the southern stretch outside of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in Kittitas County, Washington. Because of its proximity to Cle Elum Lake and Kachess Lake, Cooper Lake is a popular area for hiking, camping and fishing. Cooper Lake, where two-pole fishing is permitted, is stocked annually with Kokanee salmon and several species of trout fish. Cooper Lake is the starting point for trails that lead to other Alpine lakes in the vicinity, including the Pete Lake and Spectacle Lake at the base of Chikamin Peak. Mount Daniel is the highest summit on the Cascade Range crest of Alpine Lakes Wilderness of the central Washington (state), Washington, United States. It is the highest point in King County, Washington, King and Kittitas County, Washington, Kittitas counties. Streams on its eastern slopes form the headwaters of the Cle Elum River. The Cascade Range or Cascades is a major mountain range of western North America, extending from southern British Columbia through Washington (state), Washington and Oregon to Northern California. It includes both non-volcanic mountains, such as many of those in the North Cascades, and the notable volcanoes known as the High Cascades. The small part of the range in British Columbia is referred to as the Canadian Cascades or, locally, as the Cascade Mountains. The Northern Pacific Railway was an important American transcontinental railroad that operated across the northern tier of the Western United States, from Minnesota to the Pacific Northwest between 1864 and 1970. The Yakima River is a tributary of the Columbia River in south central and eastern Washington state, named for the indigenous Yakama people.
