Clava (cnidarian)
''Clava'' is a monotypic genus of hydrozoans in the family Hydractiniidae. It contains only one accepted species, ''Clava multicornis''. Other names synonymous with ''Clava multicornis'' include ''Clava cornea'', ''Clava diffusa'', ''Clava leptostyla'', ''Clava nodosa'', ''Clava parasitica'', ''Clava squamata'', ''Coryne squamata'', ''Hydra multicornis'', and ''Hydra squamata''. The larvae form of the species has a well developed nervous system compared to its small size. The adult form is also advanced due to its ability to stay dormant during unfavorable periods. Anatomy The larval form (planula) and adult form show two different body plans. The planula is a small, free-living larva, and is Diploblasty, diploblastic with two layers: the endoderm and ectoderm with an additional mesoglea. The ectoderm thickness decreases from the anterior to posterior poles. Further, the ectoderm has mucous gland cells for secretory purposes, support, and sense along with Cnidocyte, cnidocytes w ... Hydractinia Altispina
''Hydractinia altispina'', or high-spined commensal hydroid, is a small colonial hydroid in the family Hydractiniidae Hydractiniidae is a cnidarian family of athecate hydroids. Genera The World Register of Marine Species The World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) is a taxonomic database that aims to provide an authoritative and comprehensive list of name .... Description High-spined commensal hydroids grow as a fuzzy-looking orange coat usually on the shell of a marine snail, the scaly dogwhelk '' Nucella squamosa''. Individual polyps grow to 0.4 cm in total height. The polyps are naked and cluster on the shell surface, interspersed with defensive spines and tiny ball-like reproductive structures.Millard, N.A.H. 1975. Monograph on the Hydroida of Southern Africa. ''Ann. S. Afr. Mus.'' 68:1-513 Distribution This colonial animal is found only off the southern African coast from Luderitz to False Bay, Cape Town subtidally and to at least 30m under water. Reference ... Hydractinia
''Hydractinia'' is a genus of commensal athecate hydroids which belong to the family Hydractiniidae. ''Hydractinia'' species mostly live on hermit-crabbed marine gastropod shells. One species, ''Hydractinia echinata'', is commonly known as snail fur. Another species, ''H. minoi'', is known to be commensal with stingfishes of the genus ''Minous''. Janaria
''Janaria'' is a genus of commensal athecate hydroids in the family Hydractiniidae. It is a monotypic genus and the only species is ''Janaria mirabilis'', commonly known as staghorn hydrocoral. It is a colonial species and lives on a shell occupied by a hermit crab. It is native to the tropical and semitropical eastern Pacific Ocean. Description ''Janaria mirabilis'' is similar in appearance to a colonial coral, but comes from a quite separate group of cnidarians. The adult hydrocoral can be up to high and a similar width. It consists of a single horizontal branch and three or four vertical branches. The branches are straight or slightly curved and have blunt tips which are half as wide as the branches, the colour usually being cream or pale tan. The branches are calcified and each bears numerous polyps, the animal having been described as resembling a "fuzzy glove of feeding polyps".
