The City Plate is a Listed flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It is run at Chester over a distance of 7 furlongs and 1 yard (1,409 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in July. The race was given its current name and awarded Listed status in 2008. Conditions Races
Conditions races are horse races in which the weights carried by the runners are laid down by the conditions attached to the race. Weights are allocated according to the sex of the runners, with female runners carrying less weight than males; the age of the runners, with younger horses receiving weight from older runners to allow for relative maturity, referred to as weight for age; and the quality of the runners, with horses that have won certain values of races giving weight to less successful entrants. Conditions races are distinct from handicap races, for which the weights carried are laid down by an official handicapper to equalise the difference in ability between the runners. Cathy Gannon
Cathy Gannon (born 21 September 1981) is a retired Irish flat racing jockey. Life and career Gannon was born in Dublin, Ireland on 21 September 1981. She learnt to ride on ponies at an early age, and when she was 15, she took the course at the Apprentice Jockey's School, located in County Kildare. After this, she went to Curragh, where she joined the stable of John Oxx. Her first ride was at Wexford in 1998, where she finished in third place. Later in the same year, at Tipperary, she rode her first winner on Quivelly. She became the first woman to become Irish champion apprentice jockey in 2004 with 33 winners and was awarded the Irish Times Sportswoman of the Year Award. She relocated to England in 2006, where her chief employer was David Evans, and she became the first Irish-born female rider to compete in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, after Hayley Turner dropped out due to injury. David Probert
David Probert (born 1988) is a Welsh jockey who was joint British flat racing Champion Apprentice in 2008. Background Probert was born in Bargoed, Wales, attended Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni Welsh language school, and grew up competing in pony racing and Gymkhana in and around Wales. He attended the British Racing School in Newmarket. Riding career Since leaving the school, he has ridden for Andrew Balding, and has had Ian Balding as a mentor, although his first winner was Mountain Pass for John Lewis Llewellyn in 2007. In 2008, he won the British flat racing Champion Apprentice title jointly with William Buick. In 2012, he won the Investec Derby Trial on Goldoni. Roger Varian
Roger Varian is a British Thoroughbred racehorse trainer, based at Carlburg Stables in Newmarket, Suffolk. Riding career Varian moved to the United States as a teenager and found employment as a work rider at Hollywood Park. On his return to the United Kingdom rode as a National Hunt jockey, mainly for the Josh Gifford stable, riding seven winners. He went back to the United States in 2001 for the Maryland-based Jack Fisher commenting that his riding career "needed a push forward". Less than two months after relocating to the United States, Varian sustained a serious wrist injury in a fall, ending his career as a jockey. William Haggas
William Haggas is a British Thoroughbred racehorse trainer, based at Somerville Lodge stables in Newmarket, Suffolk. He is the son-in-law of the multiple champion jockey Lester Piggott. He was educated at Harrow and played cricket at Lord's for Harrow against Eton in 1977, 1978 and 1979, captaining the side in the 1979 match. He started his working life in his father's textile factory, but quit after three months and headed to Newmarket. Before taking out a licence in his own right, he learnt his trade with John Winter and Mark Prescott. He trained his first winner in 1987. Richard Kingscote is a British jockey who competes in flat racing. He won the 2022 Epsom Derby on Desert Crown. Background Kingscote grew up in Weston-super-Mare in a family with no racing connections and started riding as a child. Background Marquand spent his childhood near Cheltenham and, although not from a racing background, grew up around horses.
