Christoph Treutmann
Christoph Treutmann (10 June 1757)), also ''Christoph Treutmann der Ältere'' unlike his son of the same name, was a German organ builder of the Baroque period. He learned in Magdeburg from and also founded his own workshop there. His most important surviving work is the great organ of the Stiftskirche St. Georg (Grauhof), Stiftskirche Grauhof. Life Born in Silesia, Treutmann learned his trade from the Herbst family of organ builders in Magdeburg. His teacher was Herbst (family)#Heinrich Herbst the Younger, Heinrich Herbst the Younger, the son of Herbst (family)#Heinrich Herbst the Elder, Heinrich Herbst the Elder. Herbst (the Younger) later built the cathedral organ in Halberstadt between 1714 and 1718. Since Treutmann's works show stylistic similarities to the organs of the Hamburg organ builder Arp Schnitger, it is assumed that Treutmann worked at least temporarily with the latter as a journeyman and possibly also participated in the construction of the "Arp Schnitger org ...

Organ building is the profession of designing, building, restoring and maintaining pipe organs. The organ builder usually receives a commission to design an organ with a particular disposition of stops, manuals, and actions, creates a design to best respond to spatial, technical and acoustic considerations, and then constructs the instrument. The profession requires specific knowledge of such matters as the scaling of organ pipes and also familiarity with the various materials used (including woods, metals, felt, and leather) and an understanding of statics, aerodynamics, mechanics and electronics. However, although in theory the builder is responsible for all facets of construction, in practice organ-building workshops include specialists in pipes, actions, and cabinets; tasks such as the manufacture of pipes, metal casting, and making rarely-used components are often delegated to outside firms.
