Chinese Irish
Chinese people in Ireland refer to people born in China or people of Chinese descent living in the Republic of Ireland. History The first major wave of Chinese immigration to Ireland came from Hong Kong who are known as Hongkongers instead of Chinese nowadays. This group often became business people, setting up their own restaurants and settling in Ireland permanently. A second wave began in the late 1990s when large numbers of students began to come to Ireland to study at Irish universities. In the 2010s the Irish government began the "Immigrant Investor Programme" in which non-EU citizens could purchase resident status in Ireland if they contributed to government-run projects such as social housing or nursing homes or by donating to Irish charities. The Irish Times reported in 2021 that 1,088 wealthy Chinese citizens (out of a total of 1,166 entering the programme) had paid up to €1,000,000 individually to receive Irish residency. Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year, or the Spring Festival (see also #Names, § Names), is a festival that celebrates the beginning of a New Year, new year on the traditional lunisolar calendar, lunisolar Chinese calendar. It is one of the most important holidays in Chinese culture, and has been added to the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists#Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Humanity list by the UNESCO, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 2024. Hongkongers
Hongkongers (), Hong Kongers, Hong Kong citizens and Hong Kong people are demonyms that refer to a resident of Hong Kong, although they may also refer to others who were born and/or raised in the territory. The earliest inhabitants of Hong Kong were indigenous villagers such as the Punti and Tanka, who inhabited the area prior to British colonization. Though Hong Kong is home to a number of people of different racial and ethnic origins, the overwhelming majority of Hongkongers are of Han Chinese descent. Many are Yue–speaking Cantonese people and trace their ancestral home to the adjacent province of Guangdong. The territory is also home to other Han subgroups including the Taishan Yue, Hakka, Hoklo, Teochew, Shanghainese, Sichuanese and Shandong people. Eden (Irish Musician)
Jonathon Ng (born 23 December 1995), known professionally as Eden (stylised as EDEN), is an Irish musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and occasional model. He formerly operated as The Spab Project and later The Eden Project, an alias discontinued in 2015. Ng's work as The Eden Project typically featured more conventional styles of electronic dance music, such as dubstep and drum and bass, while EDEN saw himself venturing into an indie pop style. Ng released six EPs and over 70 songs and remixes as The Eden Project. As EDEN, he launched his own record label, MCMXCV, on which his debut EP ''End Credits'' was released. His second EP, ''I Think You Think Too Much of Me'', was released in August 2016, debuting at No. 43 on the Irish Albums Chart as his first charting music. Michael Craig-Martin
Sir Michael Craig-Martin (born 28 August 1941) is an Irish-born contemporary conceptual artist and painter. He is known for fostering and adopting the Young British Artists, many of whom he taught, and for his conceptual artwork, '' An Oak Tree''. He is an emeritus Professor of Fine Art at Goldsmiths. His memoir and advice for the aspiring artist, ''On Being An Artist'', was published by London-based publisher Art / Books in April 2015. Lee Chin
Lee Chin (born 8 October 1992) is an Irish hurler who plays for Wexford Senior Championship club Faythe Harriers and at inter-county level with the Wexford senior hurling team. Playing career Faythe Harriers Chin joined the Faythe Harriers club at a young age and played in all grades at juvenile and underage levels, enjoying championship success at under-21 level in 2012. Chin previously played football for St. Mary's and the Sarsfields. The Lord Mayor of Dublin () is the honorary title of the chairperson ( ) of Dublin City Council which is the local government body for the city of Dublin, the capital of Ireland. Hazel Chu
Hazel Chung-fai Chu (born 3 November 1980) is an Irish Green Party politician who has been a member of Dublin City Council since May 2019. She was chair of the Green Party from December 2019 to December 2021. She was the first Irish-born person of Chinese descent elected to political office on the island of Ireland. Central Statistics Office (Ireland)
The Central Statistics Office (CSO; ) is the statistical agency responsible for the gathering of "information relating to economic, social and general activities and conditions" in the Republic of Ireland (it does not operate in Northern Ireland), in particular the census which is held every five years.
