China Behind
''China Behind'' (再見中國) is a 1974 Hong Kong movie, directed by Tang Shu Shuen. The film painted a bleak portrait of communist China and the desire to escape, yielding a thirteen-year ban by British colonial authorities, that was lifted in 1987. The film was shot in Taiwan with official authorization, and the cinematography was done by renowned Taiwanese photographer Chang Chao-tang (張照堂). Synopsis The plot concerns four college students seeking escape to Hong Kong at the start of the 1966 Maoist Cultural Revolution in Mainland China. Reception The film was selected as one of the " Best 100 Chinese Motion Pictures" during the 24th Hong Kong Film Awards ceremony on 27 March 2005. Tang Shu Shuen
Tang Shu Shuen (; born 1941) is a former Hong Kong film director. Though her film career was brief, she was a trailblazer for socially critical art cinema in Hong Kong's populist film industry, as well as its first noted woman director. Tang was born in Yunnan province, China. She graduated from the University of Southern California. Tang's best-known films are her first two, '' The Arch'' (1968) and ''China Behind'' (1974). The first film looks at the subjugation of women and their sexuality in a traditional village through the story of a widow's unconsummated passion for a male houseguest. The second follows the harrowing journey of a group of college students trying to cross illegally into Hong Kong from a China torn by the Cultural Revolution. The Cultural Revolution, formally known as the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, was a sociopolitical movement in the People's Republic of China (PRC) launched by Mao Zedong in 1966, and lasting until his death in 1976. Its stated goal was to preserve Chinese communism by purging remnants of capitalist and traditional elements from Chinese society. The Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA; ), founded in 1982, is an annual film awards ceremony in Hong Kong. The ceremonies are typically in April. The 24th Hong Kong Film Awards ceremony was held on 27 March 2005, in the Hong Kong Coliseum and hosted by Carol Cheng and Lawrence Cheng. The Hong Kong Film Archive is a film archive collects, preserves, and screens Hong Kong films and other related materials. The archive was founded in 1993, when its Planning Office was opened by the Urban Council. It joined the International Federation of Film Archives in 1996. The archive has been under the management of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department since 2000. The film archive building in Sai Wan Ho regularly hosts exhibitions, screenings and seminars showcasing Hong Kong film. The archive edits the book series ''Hong Kong Filmography'' and ''Monographs of Hong Kong Film Veterans''.
