Chief Whip (Wales)
The Chief Whip () is a member of the cabinet in the Welsh Government. The current officeholder is Jane Hutt since May 2023. Chief whips Responsibilities The main responsibility of Chief Whip is to ensure the Welsh Government's business can go through the Senedd, in particular securing the majority of votes the government holds to vote on its legislative and policy programmes. The chief whip attends the cabinet, and works with the business minister to timetable and secure passage of legislative competence orders and acts) (formerly measures). Jane Hutt
Jane Elizabeth Hutt MS (born 15 December 1949) is a Welsh Labour Party politician serving as Minister for Social Justice since 2021. She has served as the Member of the Senedd (MS) for the Vale of Glamorgan since 1999. A member of the Parliament since its creation, Hutt holds the record for the longest serving Welsh Government minister and has served in every administration to date. She served continually in government from May 1999 until the November 2017 reshuffle, returning in December 2018. Hutt has held several of the most senior government offices, including Minister for Finance, Minister for Health and Social Services, and Minister for Education. Second Rhodri Morgan Government
The second Rhodri Morgan government (2003–2007) was a Welsh Labour, Labour government in Wales. Having won 30 out of the 60 seats available in the 2003 National Assembly for Wales election, 2003 general election and with the non-voting Llywydd of the Senedd, Presiding Officer and Deputy both coming from the opposition, the Labour party were able to form a majority government with 30 seats to the opposition's 28 with Rhodri Morgan continuing as First Minister for Wales, First Minister. Third Jones Government
The third Jones government was a Labour– Liberal Democrat coalition government formed after the results of the 2016 general election in Wales. On 14 October 2016, Dafydd Elis-Thomas left Plaid Cymru in order to support the coalition government and to give them a ruling majority; he later sat as an independent in the Senedd. The government was replaced by the Drakeford government on 13 December 2018, following the resignation of Carwyn Jones as First Minister the previous day. The Trefnydd, or Leader of the House in English, and formerly Minister for Assembly Business, is a member of the Cabinet in the Welsh Government, who manages the government's business in the Senedd (the Welsh Parliament; ; formerly the ''National Assembly for Wales''). Second Jones Government
The second Jones government (11 May 2011 – 19 May 2016) was a Labour minority government. Having won the largest number of seats in the 2011 general election (30 out of 60) the Labour sought to form a minority government, having previously governed in coalition with Plaid Cymru. Carwyn Jones was re-elected First Minister in May 2011 and continued to serve up to and beyond the 2016 election. During the five years of this government there were two significant reshuffles (March 2013 and September 2014) as well as two departures from the Cabinet, both of which led to widespread changes in personnel and in ministerial titles and responsibilities. The first Jones government (10 December 2009 – 11 May 2011) was a continuation of the previous Labour–Plaid Cymru coalition government in Wales. Following Rhodri Morgan's decision to retire, a leadership contest was held for the position of Welsh Labour Leader. The election was won by Carwyn Jones who was confirmed leader of Welsh Labour on 1 December 2009 and as First Minister on 9 December 2009 by the Welsh Assembly, Jones was officially sworn in the next day. Janice Gregory
Janice Gregory (née Powell; born 10 January 1955) is a Welsh Labour politician, who represented the constituency of Ogmore from the time the National Assembly for Wales was established in 1999 to the election of 2016. Her main contribution to the Assembly has been through chairing the Social Justice and Regeneration Committee. Family Gregory was born in Treorchy, the daughter of Raymond Powell, who was Labour Party Member of Parliament for Ogmore from 1979. She was educated at Bridgend Grammar School for Girls and worked as Constituency Secretary to her father from 1991, while also being active in the local Constituency Labour Party in which she was Women's Officer and Chair of the Ogmore Women's Forum. The fourth Rhodri Morgan government (19 July 2007 – 10 December 2009) was a Labour–Plaid Cymru coalition government of Wales led by First Minister for Wales, Rhodri Morgan. Carl Sargeant
Carl Sargeant (1968 – 7 November 2017) was a Welsh politician who was the Welsh Government#Cabinet, Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Children in the Welsh Government. He represented the constituency of Alyn and Deeside (National Assembly for Wales constituency), Alyn and Deeside in the National Assembly for Wales from 2003. Sargeant was removed from his Cabinet position and suspended from Welsh Labour on 3 November 2017 following allegations about his behaviour. He died four days later, reportedly taking his own life.
