Cherupaithangal (Malayalam: ചെറുപൈതങ്ങൾ. Full title: ചെറുപൈതങ്ങൾക്ക ഉപകാരാർത്ഥം ഇംക്ലീശിൽനിന്ന പരിഭാഷപ്പെടുത്തിയ കഥകൾ) is the first Malayalam book ever to be printed in Kerala. ''Cherupaithangal'' is a collection of seven stories for children translated from English by the British missionary Benjamin Bailey and printed in C. M. S. Press, Kottayam in 1824. It is also the first book in Malayalam that could be categorized as children's literature. George Irumbayam
George Irumbayam is an Indian literary critic and literature researcher. Author of 39 literary and 7 spiritual books. Early life He was born on 19 December 1938 as the eldest child of Irumbayam Poovathunkal Varkey and Annamma, who totally had four children. He studied in the Kaarikkodu-Pothi-Thalayolapparambu schools between 1945 and 1956, and at St. Thomas College Pala from 1956 to 1957. He also studied at Sacred heart college Thevara (1958-1961), University college, Trivandrum (1961-1962) and at a Maharajas College (1962-1963). He received his Masters from Kerala University for Malayalam and English, and the Masters Gandhism from Madhura university, Ph.D from Calicut university, and passed B.A. and M.A. with first rank. Benjamin Bailey (missionary)
Benjamin Bailey (November 1791 in Dewsbury – 3 April 1871 in Sheinton, Shropshire, England) was a British Church Mission Society missionary in Kerala, India for 34 years. He was ordained 1815 and moved to Kerala in 1816 where he found a mission station in Kottayam, and in 1821 he established a Malayalam printing press. He translated the Bible into Malayalam, in 1846 published the first English-Malayalam dictionary, and in 1849 published the first Malayalam-English dictionary. Life Benjamin Bailey was born in November 1791, as the son of Joseph Bailey and his wife Martha. 1812, two years under Rev. T. Scott for missionary training; one year under J. Buckworth, Vicar of Dewsbury. He was ordained as Deacon on 6 August and as Priest on 17 December 1815, by the Archbishop of York (to the Curacy of Harewood, Yorkshire).
