Charybdis (mountain)
Charybdis is a mountain in the Sierra Nevada of California. Located deep in the backcountry of Kings Canyon National Park, Charybdis sits at the heart of one of the mountain range's least accessible regions. The shortest approach is 16 miles from the Sabrina Lake trailhead, and requires significant cross-country travel over rugged, exposed class 3 terrain. The shortest approach not requiring extensive cross-country travel is 23 miles long, beginning at the South Lake trailhead. Charybdis and its sister peak Scylla flank the Enchanted Gorge at its upper end, rising from the east and west sides of the gorge, respectively. Theodore Solomons gave Charybdis its name in 1895 on an expedition through the area. Its name, together with Scylla's, is a reference to the ancient Greek legend of Scylla and Charybdis. Scylla And Charybdis
In Greek mythology, Scylla), is obsolete. ( ; grc-gre, Σκύλλα, Skúlla, ) is a legendary monster who lives on one side of a narrow channel of water, opposite her counterpart Charybdis. The two sides of the strait are within an arrow's range of each other—so close that sailors attempting to avoid Charybdis would pass dangerously close to Scylla and vice versa. Scylla is first attested in Homer's ''Odyssey'', where Odysseus and his crew encounter her and Charybdis on their travels. Black Giant
Black Giant is a mountain summit located near the crest of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, in Fresno County of northern California, United States. Black Giant ranks as the 86th highest summit in California. It is situated in northern Kings Canyon National Park, west-southwest of the community of Big Pine, southwest of Mount Thompson, and south-southeast of Mount Fiske, which is the nearest higher neighbor. Topographic relief is significant as it rises above LeConte Canyon in approximately two miles. Muir Pass is to the northwest, and the approach to this remote peak is made via the John Muir Trail. Sierra Peaks Section Peak List
The Sierra Peaks Section (SPS) is a mountaineering society within the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club that serves to provide mountaineering activities for Sierra Club members in the Sierra Nevada, and to honor mountaineers who have summited Sierra Nevada peaks. History The Sierra Peaks Section was established in 1955. The Section maintains historic summit registers at Bancroft Library on the University of California, Berkeley campus. Yosemite Decimal System
The Yosemite Decimal System (YDS) is a three-part system used for rating the difficulty of walks, hikes, and climbs, primarily used by mountaineers in the United States and Canada. It was first devised by members of the Sierra Club in Southern California in the 1950s as a refinement of earlier systems, particularly those developed in Yosemite Valley, and quickly spread throughout North America. Description The class 5 portion of the class scale is primarily a rock climbing classification system, while classes 1–2 are used mainly in hiking and trail running. Kings Canyon National Park
Kings Canyon National Park is an American national park in the southern Sierra Nevada, in Fresno and Tulare Counties, California. Originally established in 1890 as General Grant National Park, the park was greatly expanded and renamed to Kings Canyon National Park on March 4, 1940. The park's namesake, Kings Canyon, is a rugged glacier-carved valley more than a mile (1,600 m) deep. Scylla is a 12,956-foot-elevation (3,949 meter) mountain summit located west of the crest of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, in Fresno County, California, United States. This peak is situated in Kings Canyon National Park, southwest of Charybdis, southeast of Mount Goddard, and west of Mount McDuffie. Topographic relief is significant as the summit rises above Enchanted Gorge in approximately one mile. The John Muir Trail provides one possible approach option to this remote peak.
