Charles F. Adair
Charles F. Adair was born on October 19, 1874, to Irish immigrant parents in Bear Valley, California. His father immigrated to the United States in 1833 and in 1860 moved west into Mariposa County as part of a company of men with John Fremont. Charles was one of the families six children all of whom lived in Mariposa County. Early in life Charles worked as a miner in California and later Arizona until 1914 when he became one of the first park rangers in Yosemite National Park. In 1929 he was made acting Park Forester for a year where he planted two giant sequoia trees near the ranger housing in Yosemite Valley. He is responsible for introducing golden trout into Adair Lake Adair Lake is a lake within the backcountry of Yosemite National Park, in the Sierra Nevada, Madera County, California. Bear Valley (formerly Haydenville, Biddle's Camp, Biddleville, Simpsonville, and Johnsonville) is a census-designated place in Mariposa County, California, United States. It is located south-southeast of Coulterville, at an elevation of . Bear Valley has been designated California Historical Landmark #331. The population was 156 at the 2020 census. History The place was originally called "Haydenville" in honor of David, Charles, and William Hayden, gold miners. The place later bore the names "Biddle's Camp" and "Biddleville" in honor of William C. Biddle. It later was named "Simpsonville" in honor of Robert Simpson, local merchant. The name "Johnsonville" honored John F. Johnson. The name became Bear Valley in 1858. The Haydenville post office opened before January 21, 1851, and closed in 1852. The California golden trout (''Oncorhynchus aguabonita or Oncorhynchus mykiss aguabonita''), is a species of trout native to California. The golden trout is normally found in the Golden Trout Creek (tributary to the Kern River), Volcano Creek (tributary to Golden Trout Creek), and the South Fork Kern River. The Golden trout is the official freshwater state fish of California since 1947. The California golden trout is closely related to two rainbow trout subspecies.
