In geology, a group is a lithostratigraphy, lithostratigraphic Stratigraphic unit, unit consisting of a series of related Geological formation, formations that have been classified together to form a group. Formations are the fundamental unit of stratigraphy. Groups may sometimes be combined into Supergroup (geology), supergroups. Groups are useful for showing relationships between formations, and they are also useful for small-scale mapping or for studying the stratigraphy of large regions. Geologists exploring a new area have sometimes defined groups when they believe the strata within the groups can be divided into formations during subsequent investigations of the area. It is possible for only some of the strata making up a group to be divided into formations. Burica Peninsula
The Burica Peninsula is a coastal relief that juts south into the Pacific Ocean and is divided into two areas: the west side belongs to Costa Rica, and the area that belongs to Panama, which dominates the east and about two-thirds of the peninsula. The Costa Rican side is the southernmost of the country (except for the Cocos Island, island of Coco). On this peninsula there are several points including Punta Burica (Panama), Punta Burica (on the Panamanian) southernmost point of the peninsula, Punta Gorda and Punta El Mangle (both in the Costa Rican side). Population This area is inhabited by people whose main activity is fishing. The Panamanian section is in Chiriquí Province, with the city of Puerto Armuelles, the most populous of the peninsula. Sandstone Groups
Sandstone is a clastic sedimentary rock composed mainly of sand-sized (0.0625 to 2 mm) silicate grains, cemented together by another mineral. Sandstones comprise about 20–25% of all sedimentary rocks. Most sandstone is composed of quartz or feldspar, because they are the most resistant minerals to the weathering processes at the Earth's surface. Like uncemented sand, sandstone may be imparted any color by impurities within the minerals, but the most common colors are tan, brown, yellow, red, grey, pink, white, and black. Siltstone Groups
Siltstone, also known as aleurolite, is a clastic sedimentary rock that is composed mostly of silt. It is a form of mudrock with a low clay mineral content, which can be distinguished from shale by its lack of fissility. Although its permeability and porosity is relatively low, siltstone is sometimes a tight gas reservoir rock, an unconventional reservoir for natural gas that requires hydraulic fracturing for economic gas production. Siltstone was prized in ancient Egypt for manufacturing statuary and cosmetic palettes. The geology of Costa Rica is part of the Panama plate, Panama Microplate, which is slowly moving north relative to the stable Caribbean plate, Caribbean Plate. In the late Cretaceous, an oceanic trench or Back-arc region, backarc system formed in connection with a subduction zone, situated where the Isthmus of Panama is now located. Into the early Paleogene, deep sea, open ocean sediments and basalt lava accumulated in the backarc. Volcanic activity was intense in the Cretaceous, Paleocene and Eocene.
