Chambord Meteorite
Chambord is an iron meteorite found in Quebec. History It was found in 1904 by a farmer about from the village of Chambord, Quebec.Johnson, The Chambord Meteorite, Ottawa Naturalist, June 4, 1906 The exact location and the name of the farmer are unknown. When the meteorite was found, it was brought to the attention of the superintendent of Mines for the Province of Quebec who then loaned it to the Geological Survey of Canada for analysis. Classification It is a medium octahedrite, IIIAB. Fragments The recovered fragment is an irregularly shaped block about x x . Medium Octahedrite
Octahedrites are the most common structural class of iron meteorites. The structures occur because the meteoric iron has a certain nickel concentration that leads to the exsolution of kamacite out of taenite while cooling. Structure Octahedrites derive their name from the crystal structure paralleling an octahedron. Opposite faces are parallel so, although an octahedron has 8 faces, there are only 4 sets of kamacite plates. Due to a long cooling time in the interior of the parent asteroids, these alloys have crystallized into intermixed millimeter-sized bands (from about 0.2 mm to 5 cm). When polished and acid etched the classic Widmanstätten patterns of intersecting lines of lamellar kamacite, are visible. In gaps between the kamacite and taenite lamellae, a fine-grained mixture called plessite is often found. Chambord, Quebec
Chambord is a municipality in Le Domaine-du-Roy Regional County Municipality in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec, Canada. The Chambord meteorite was found near here in 1904. The municipality also includes the community of Val-Jalbert, located along Quebec Route 169 between the village of Chambord itself and Roberval.
