Cervantesiaceae
The Santalaceae, sandalwoods, are a widely distributed family of flowering plants (including small trees, shrubs, perennial herbs, and epiphytic climbersHewson & George t al.br>''Santalaceae'' taxonomy, 1984, pp. 191-194.) which, like other members of Santalales, are partially parasitic on other plants. Its flowers are bisexual or, by abortion ("flower drop"), unisexual.Pilger, R''Santalaceae''(with 17 figures). R. Br. Prodr. Fl. Nov. Holl. (1810) 350, pp. 1-45. Modern treatments of the Santalaceae include the family Viscaceae (mistletoes), previously considered distinct. The APG II system of 2003 recognises the family and assigns it to the order Santalales in the clade core eudicots. However, the circumscription by APG is much wider than accepted by previous classifications, including the plants earlier treated in families Eremolepidaceae and Viscaceae. It includes about 1,000 species in 43 genera. Many have reported traditional and cultural uses, including as medicine. Gener ...

Santalales
The Santalales are an order (biology), order of flowering plants in the dicotyledons. Well-known members of the Santalales include Santalum, sandalwoods and the many species of mistletoes. The order has a cosmopolitan distribution, but is heavily concentrated in tropical and subtropical regions. It derives its name from its type genus, ''Santalum'' (sandalwood). Overview Many of the members of the order are parasitic plants, mostly hemiparasites, able to produce sugars through photosynthesis, but tapping the stems or roots of other plants to obtain water and minerals; some (e.g. ''Arceuthobium'') are obligate parasites, have low concentrations of chlorophyll within their shoots (1/5 to 1/10 of that found in their host's foliage), and derive the majority of their sustenance from their hosts' vascular tissues (water, micronutrient, micro- and macronutrients, and sucrose). Most have seeds without testa (botany), testae (seed coats), which is unusual for flowering plants. Classif ...

Santalum Ellipticum
''Santalum ellipticum'', commonly known as ''Iliahialoe'' ( Hawaiian) or coastal sandalwood, is a species of flowering plant in the mistletoe family, Santalaceae, that is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. It is a sprawling shrub to small tree, typically reaching a height of and a canopy spread of , but is extremely variable in size and shape. Like other members of the genus, ''S. ellipticum'' is a hemi-parasite, deriving some of its nutrients from the host plant by attaching to its roots. Habitat and range ''Iliahialoe'' inhabits dry forests, low shrublands, and lava plains throughout the archipelago, including the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, but has been extirpated from Laysan and Kahoolawe. Although never recorded on Niihau, its historic presence on the island is almost certain. ''S. ellipticum'' is generally found at elevations from sea level to , but populations can occur as high as . An isolated individual was observed growing at on the island of Hawaii. Uses No ...

Exocarpos
''Exocarpos'' is a genus of Flowering plant, flowering shrubs and small trees in the sandalwood family, Santalaceae. They are found throughout Southeast Asia, Australia and the Pacific Islands. They are semi-Parasitic plant, parasitic, requiring the roots of a host tree, a trait they share with many other members of the Santalaceae. In Australia, some species are also known as ballarts or cherries. The genus ''Exocarpos'' was first described by Jacques Labillardière on 7 May 1792:I discovered an evergreen tree, which has its nut situated, like that of the acajou, upon a fleshy receptacle much larger than itself. I therefore named this new genus ''exocarpos. . . .'' The principal characters of this plant have led me to rank it among the terebinthinaceous tribe, next to the anacardium. I have given it the name of ''exocarpos cupressiformis''.Convention dictates that the taxon is often expressed as Exocarpos Labill. 1798. The name exocarpos derives from the Greek exo (outside) an ...
