Shenandoah is a borough in Schuylkill County in the Coal Region of Pennsylvania. It is distinct from Shenandoah Heights, which is part of West Mahanoy Township immediately to the north. As of 2021, the borough's population was 4,247. Shenandoah is located approximately northwest of Allentown, northwest of Philadelphia, and miles west of New York City. History The area that ultimately became Shenandoah was first settled by a farmer named Peter Kehley in 1835. Kehley cleared a patch of land at the center of the valley and built a log cabin and maintained his farm for about 20 years in total isolation. He sold his claim to the Philadelphia Land Company, which in anticipation of the opening of coal mines in the area, laid out the town in 1862. The Shamokin Maroons were a minor league baseball team based in Shamokin, Pennsylvania. In 1887 and 1888, the Maroons played exclusively as members of the independent Central Pennsylvania League, winning the 1887 league championship before folding during the 1888 season. History After hosting a team in the semi–professional Central Pennsylvania league in 1886, the 1887 Shamokin Maroons became the first minor league baseball team based in Shamokin, Pennsylvania. Mount Carmel is a borough in Northumberland County, located in the Coal Heritage Region of Central Pennsylvania's Susquehanna River Valley, United States. The population was 5,725 at the 2020 census. It is located 88 miles (141 km) northwest of Philadelphia and 71 miles (114 km) northeast of Harrisburg, in the Anthracite Coal Region. It is completely encircled by Mount Carmel Township. History Sawmill operator, Albert Bradford, gave Mount Carmel its name because of its elevation and beautiful setting in the mountains.
