Cecil Wigglesworth
Air Commodore Cecil George Wigglesworth, (17 October 1893 – 8 August 1961) was a Royal Air Force (RAF) officer and cricketer. A right-handed batsman, he played a first-class match for the Royal Air Force against the Royal Navy in August 1927. In 1930, he played for the Straits Settlements against the Federated Malay States in Kuala Lumpur. In the RAF, Wigglesworth reached the rank of air commodore. By some accounts he was the original of Biggles. Tadcaster
Tadcaster is a market town and civil parish in the Selby district of North Yorkshire, England, east of the Great North Road, north-east of Leeds, and south-west of York. Its historical importance from Roman times onward was largely as the lowest road crossing-point on the River Wharfe until the construction of the A64 Tadcaster by-pass some to the south, in 1978. There are two rail crossings downstream of the town before the Wharfe joins the River Ouse near Cawood. Tadcaster is twinned with Saint-Chély-d'Apcher in France. The town was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974, but is now part of North Yorkshire. Thanks to its position on the banks of the River Wharfe parts of the town adjacent to the bridge are prone to flooding. Straits Settlements Cricket Team
The Straits Settlements cricket team was the team that represented the Straits Settlements in international cricket matches between 1890 and 1940. History Between 1890 and 1909, the Straits Settlements played regular Interport matches against Hong Kong, Ceylon and Shanghai. After 1909 they formed the combined Malaya cricket team along with the Federated Malay States for these matches, but continued to play international matches against the Federated Malay States. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". Philip Wigglesworth
Air Marshal Sir Horace Ernest Philip Wigglesworth, (11 July 1896 – 31 May 1975) was a senior officer in the Royal Air Force. RAF career Educated at Brookfield Community School, Chesterfield, Chesterfield Grammar School, Wigglesworth joined the Royal Naval Air Service, a precursor of the Royal Air Force, in 1915, flying both fighters and bombers. His actions during an aerial battle on 23 January 1917 resulted in a Distinguished Service Cross (United Kingdom), Distinguished Service Cross for "conspicuous gallantry and enterprise": he suffered serious frostbite in that action. Wigglesworth served in the Second World War as head of the Combined Planning Staff at Headquarters Middle East Command, as Senior Air Staff Officer at Headquarters RAF Middle East and then as Air Officer Commanding AHQ East Africa. Biggles
James Bigglesworth, nicknamed "Biggles", is a fictional pilot and adventurer, the title character and hero of the ''Biggles'' series of adventure books, written for young readers by W. E. Johns (1893–1968). Biggles made his first appearance in the story ''The White Fokker'', published in the first issue of ''Popular Flying'' magazine and again as part of the first collection of Biggles stories, ''The Camels Are Coming'' (both 1932). Johns continued to write "Biggles books" until his death in 1968. The series eventually included nearly a hundred volumes – novels as well as short story collections – most of the latter with a common setting and time.
