Straits Settlements Cricket Team
The Straits Settlements cricket team was the team that represented the Straits Settlements in international cricket matches between 1890 and 1940. History Between 1890 and 1909, the Straits Settlements played regular Interport matches against Hong Kong cricket team, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka national cricket team, Ceylon and Shanghai cricket team, Shanghai. After 1909 they formed the combined Malaya cricket team along with the Federated Malay States cricket team, Federated Malay States for these matches, but continued to play international matches against the Federated Malay States. Straits Settlements
The Straits Settlements () were a group of British territories located in Southeast Asia. Originally established in 1826 as part of the territories controlled by the British East India Company, the Straits Settlements came under control of the British Raj in 1858 and then under direct British control as a Crown colony in 1867. In 1946, following the end of World War II and the Japanese occupation, the colony was dissolved as part of Britain's reorganisation of its Southeast Asian dependencies in the area. The Straits Settlements originally consisted of the four individual settlements of Penang, Singapore, Malacca, and Dinding. Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands were added in 1886. The island of Labuan, off the coast of Borneo, was also incorporated into the colony with effect from 1 January 1907, becoming a separate settlement within it in 1912. Edward Barrett (English Sportsman)
Edward Ivo Medhurst Barrett (22 June 1879 – 10 July 1950) was an English first-class cricketer, rugby union international, British Army officer, and colonial police officer. His military career began in 1899 with the Lancashire Fusiliers, with Barrett serving in the Second Boer War. He later transferred to the colonial police in British Malaya, before joining the Shanghai Municipal Police. He rose to become its commissioner between 1925 and 1929. As a sportsman, he played first-class cricket, mainly for Hampshire between 1896 and 1912, with additional matches in 1920 and 1925. In rugby union, he was capped at Test level by England in 1903, while in golf he was the Japanese amateur champion in 1917. Northamptonshire County Cricket Club
Northamptonshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Northamptonshire. Its limited overs team is called the Northants Steelbacks – a reference to the Northamptonshire Regiment which was formed in 1881. The name was supposedly a tribute to the soldiers' apparent indifference to the harsh discipline imposed by their officers. Founded in 1878, Northamptonshire (Northants) held minor status at first but was a prominent member of the early Minor Counties Championship during the 1890s. Oxford University Cricket Club
Oxford University Cricket Club (OUCC), which represents the University of Oxford, had held first-class status since 1827 when it made its debut in the inaugural University Match between OUCC and Cambridge University Cricket Club (CUCC). Following the 2021 University Match, OUCC lost its first-class status. It was classified as a List A team in 1973 only. The Western Australian men's cricket team, formerly nicknamed the Western Warriors, represent the Australian state of Western Australia in Australian domestic cricket. John Aloysius Chamberlain (29 August 1884 – 1 April 1941) was an Australian sportsman who played Australian rules football, cricket and rugby union at a high level. Family The son of Edmund Chamberlain (1827–1891), and Mary Ann Chamberlain (-1916), John Aloysius Chamberlain was born in Glanville, South Australia on 29 August 1884. Sydney Gratien Adair Maartensz (14 April 1882 — 10 September 1967) was a Ceylonese-born English first-class cricketer. Maartensz was born into a Burgher family at Colombo in April 1882. He spent his youth in British Malaya, where he was educated at the Victoria Institution. Prior to the First World War, he played in Malaya for the Straits Settlements cricket team in interport matches against Hong Kong and Shanghai. During the war, he served in the British Army as a trooper with the Honourable Artillery Company. Following the war, he played first-class cricket for Hampshire as a wicket-keeper, deputising for Walter Livsey while he was still on active service in India, and favoured over George Brown, who was utilised more was a bowler. The Philadelphian cricket team was a team that represented Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in first-class cricket between 1878 and 1913. Even with the United States having played the first ever international cricket match against Canada in 1844, the sport began a slow decline in the U.S. This decline was furthered by the rise in popularity of baseball. In Philadelphia, however, the sport remained very popular and from the end of the 19th century until the outbreak of World War I, the city produced a first class team that rivaled many others in the world. Bruce Lindsay Eddis (born 17 August 1883 in Calcutta, Bengal, India; died 12 May 1966 in Maidenhead, Berkshire, England) was an English soldier and first-class cricketer.
