Catholic Church In Timor-Leste
The Catholic Church in Timor-Leste is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the pope in Rome. Organization Upon its independence from Indonesia, Timor-Leste became only the second predominantly Catholic country in Asia (after the Philippines), a legacy of its status as a former Portuguese colony. About 98.3% of the population was Catholic in Timor-Leste in 2016, which meant over 1,000,000 faithful. The country was divided into three dioceses: Dili, Baucau and Maliana (erected in 2010). These dioceses are immediately subject to the Holy See. The Apostolic Nunciature to East Timor is Marco Sprizzi, who took over from Wojciech Załuski in 2022. Wojciech Załuski
Wojciech Załuski (born 5 April 1960) is a Polish prelate of the Catholic Church who has worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See since 1985. He has been an apostolic nuncio and an archbishop since 2014. Biography He was born in Załuski-Lipniewo, in the center-east of Poland, on 5 April 1960. He earned a degree in canon law. On 1 June 1985, he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Łomza. He joined the diplomatic service of the Holy See on 1 July 1989 and filled assignments in Burundi, Malta, Albania, Zambia, Sri Lanka, Georgia, Ukraine, the Philippines, and Guatemala. On 15 July 2014, Pope Francis named him apostolic nuncio to Burundi and titular archbishop of Diocletiana. He received his episcopal consecration on 9 August from Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Maliana is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in East Timor. The diocese includes the administrative region of Maliana in districts of Liquica, Bobonaro, and Cova–Lima and 16 sub-districts. On 30 January 2010 the Vatican erected a third diocese in East Timor. Fr. Norberto do Amaral was nominated the first bishop of the newly created Diocese of Maliana. The diocese is formed of 10 parishes serving just over 200,000 Catholics, who represent more than 98% of the area's population.
