Carolina Barco Isakson
María Carolina Barco Isakson (born 1951) is a Colombian-American diplomat, who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia from 2002 to 2007, and then as Ambassador of Colombia to the United States from 2006 to 2010. She served as the Colombian ambassador to Spain in 2019 and 2020. Personal life Carolina Barco Isakson is a daughter of Virgilio Barco Vargas, a former mayor, senator, ambassador, President of Colombia and director to the World Bank Board. Her mother, Carolina Isakson Proctor, an American-born former First Lady of Colombia, helped to create, and then direct, Colombia's national anti-poverty program, "Bienestar," which was established in February 1987 to provide food and day care for Colombian's poorest children. Carolina Barco was born in Boston, Massachusetts while her father, Virgilio Barco, Virgilio Barco Vargas, was there studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The ambassador of Colombia to the United States is the ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Republic of Colombia to the United States of America. The Ambassador is Colombia's foremost diplomatic representative to the United States, and Chief of Mission in Washington, D.C. The Ambassador however, is not the only Colombian diplomat in the United States, the other two being the Permanent Representative of Colombia to the Organization of American States also in Washington, D.C., and the Permanent Representative of Colombia to the United Nations in New York City. Colombia Diversa is an organization based in Bogotá that promotes and defends LGBT rights in Colombia. It was founded in 2004 by a group of activists who met in 2003 while advocating for a failed bill recognizing the rights of same-sex couples. The original goal of Colombia Diversa was to create a better situation for same-sex couples. Colombia Diversa has been referred to as "the country's leading LGBT organization" by GLAAD. Since constitutional rights including marriage, adoption, military service, etc. were instituted in Colombia, the organization has focused on violence including homicide directed at LGBT people. Virgilio Barco Isakson (born 1965) is a Colombian impact investor and LBGTQI+ activist. He is the son of former Colombian President Virgilio Barco Vargas. Career Since 2013, Barco Isakson has been the first Latin America Director at Acumen, a leading impact investing fund that focuses on tackling global poverty. Virgilio Barco Vargas (17 September 1921 – 20 May 1997) was a Colombian politician and civil engineer who served as the 27th President of Colombia serving from 7 August 1986 to 7 August 1990. Early life Barco was born in Cúcuta in the Norte de Santander Department of Colombia to Jorge Enrique Barco Maldonado and Julieta Vargas Durán. He studied Civil Engineering at the National University of Colombia and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from which he graduated in 1943. He entered politics in 1943 when he became a city council member for the Liberal Party in the town of Durania. Carolina Isakson de Barco (born Mary Caroline Isakson, January 6, 1930 – January 14, 2012) was an American and Colombian artist and philanthropist who served as first lady of Colombia from 1986 to 1990 and previously as first lady of Bogotá from 1966 to 1969 as wife of Virgilio Barco Vargas.
