Colombia Diversa
Colombia Diversa is an organization based in Bogotá that promotes and defends LGBT rights in Colombia. It was founded in 2004 by a group of activists who met in 2003 while advocating for a failed bill recognizing the rights of same-sex couples. The original goal of Colombia Diversa was to create a better situation for same-sex couples. Colombia Diversa has been referred to as "the country's leading LGBT organization" by GLAAD. Since constitutional rights including marriage, adoption, military service, etc. were instituted in Colombia, the organization has focused on violence including homicide directed at LGBT people. Their current mission statement is "in order to live in an equal society for all, we carry out strategic litigation, advocacy and research on the human rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and trans people in Colombia." GLAAD () is an American non-governmental media monitoring organization. Originally founded as a protest against defamatory coverage of gay and lesbian demographics and their portrayals in the media and entertainment industries, it has since expanded to queer, bisexual, and transgender people. LGBT Rights In Colombia
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) rights in Colombia have advanced significantly in the 21st century, and are now quite progressive. Consensual same-sex sexual activity in Colombia was decriminalized in 1981. Between February 2007 and April 2008, three rulings of the Constitutional Court granted registered same-sex couples the same pension, social security and property rights as registered heterosexual couples. In 2011, Congress passed a law banning discrimination based on sexual orientation, and on 28 April 2016, the Constitutional Court legalized same-sex marriage, making Colombia the fourth South American country to do so.
