Carola Von Der Weth
Carola von der Weth (née Manger; born 19 June 1959) is a German chess Woman FIDE Master who won East Germany Women's Chess Championship (1986). Life Carola von der Weth completed an apprenticeship as a graduate engineer for urban planning and works in the ''Construction and Urban Development Office of the City of Suhl''. Her hobbies were chess and correspondence chess. In 1976 she took part in a East Germany Women's Chess Championship for the first time. In 1983 she won East Germany Women's Correspondence Chess Championship and in 1986 she won the 35th East Germany Women's Chess Championship. Chess career Individual Championships As Carola Manger, she took part in the East Germany Women's Chess Championships in 1976 in Gröditz, 1979 in Suhl, 1982 in Salzwedel, 1983 in Cottbus, 1984 in Eilenburg and 1986 in Nordhausen. Suhl
Suhl () is a city in Thuringia, Germany, located SW of Erfurt, NE of Würzburg and N of Nuremberg. With its 37,000 inhabitants, it is the smallest of the six urban districts within Thuringia. Together with its northern neighbour-town Zella-Mehlis, Suhl forms the largest urban area in the Thuringian Forest with a population of 46,000. Chess Bundesliga
The term Chess Bundesliga (german: Schach-Bundesliga) normally refers to the premier league of team chess in Germany established in 1980. It is arguably the strongest league of its kind and attracts many high-rated grandmasters. Austria also has a Bundesliga for chess, usually described as the Bundesliga OST (for Österreich). Format Sixteen teams face each other in a single round robin format, each match-day team formed of eight players. The season runs between October and April. Gerhard Friedrich Hund (born February 4, 1932 in Leipzig) is a German chess player, mathematician and computer scientist. Biography He is the oldest son of physicist Friedrich Hund (1896–1997). He studied at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena (1950–1951) and at the Goethe University Frankfurt (1951–1955). In 1955 he met his wife Juliane Hund (née Meyer). They had four daughters Susanne van Kempen (b.1958), Barbara Hund (b.1959), Isabel Hund (b.1962) and Dorothee Lampe (b.1966). Juliane Hund
Juliane Hund (née Meyer, 23 September 1928 – 9 December 1999) was a German chess player. Life Juliane Meyer was born on 23 September 1928 in Darmstadt. She spent her childhood in Königsberg and before the end of World War II moved to Volkenroda in Thuringia to her grandmother. In 1946, she graduated from high school in Mühlhausen, Thuringia and then studied law in Marburg, Lausanne and Frankfurt. Meyer founded a student chess club at the University of Frankfurt, where she met her husband Gerhard Hund in 1955. They got married in 1957 and had four children. Her four daughters Susanne van Kempen (née Hund, * 1958), Barbara Hund (Woman Grandmaster 1982, * 1959), Isabel Hund (FIDE-Master, * 1962) and Dorothee Lampe (née Hund, * 1966) also became chess players. World Correspondence Chess Championship
The World Correspondence Chess Championship determines the World Champion in correspondence chess. Men and women of any age are eligible to contest the title. The official World Correspondence Chess Championship is managed by the International Correspondence Chess Federation (ICCF). The world championship comprises four stages: Preliminaries, Semi-Finals, Candidates' Tournament, and Final. ICCF tournament rules define which players can access each stage. The first-, second- and third-placed finishers from the previous Final, and the first- and second-placed finishers from the Candidates' Tournaments have access to the World Correspondence Chess Championship Final. Elo Rating System
The Elo rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in zero-sum games such as chess. It is named after its creator Arpad Elo, a Hungarian-American physics professor. The Elo system was invented as an improved chess-rating system over the previously used Harkness system, but is also used as a rating system in association football, American football, baseball, basketball, pool, table tennis, and various board games and esports. The difference in the ratings between two players serves as a predictor of the outcome of a match. Two players with equal ratings who play against each other are expected to score an equal number of wins. A player whose rating is 100 points greater than their opponent's is expected to score 64%; if the difference is 200 points, then the expected score for the stronger player is 76%.
