Carlos Sampaio Garrido
Carlos de Almeida Afonseca Sampaio Garrido (5 April 1883 – April 1960) was a Portuguese diplomat credited with saving the lives of approximately 1,000 Jews in Nazi-occupied Hungary while serving as Portugal's ambassador in Budapest between July and December 1944. Life and work He served as Minister Plenipotentiary and acting Ambassador of Portugal in Budapest from 1939-44. Along with Teixeira Branquinho, (Portuguese Chargé d'Affaires in Budapest in 1944) Garrido rented houses and apartments to shelter and protect refugees from deportation and murder. They obtained permission from the Portuguese government to issue safe conduct passes to all persons who had relatives in Portugal, Brazil, or the Portuguese colonies or had a connection to Portugal. Garrido and Branquinho also established an office of the Portuguese Red Cross at the Portuguese legation to care for Jewish refugees. Carlos Alberto Garrido Opazo (born January 6, 1977, in Talca, Chile) is a Chilean former footballer who played as a centre-back. Career He began his career playing for his hometown team Rangers in 1997. In 2001, he moved to Universidad de Chile before returning to Rangers for a season. In 2006, he moved to Audax Italiano where he was a regular with the first team, returning to Rangers in 2013. Garrido became the team captain of Audax Italiano at the beginning of 2008 when teammate Carlos Villanueva refused to the post because of a dispute he had with the team's administration. In August 2014, he retired from football due to a thrombophilia detected in 2013. In total, he has more than 200 games in the Chilean Primera División. At international level, Garrido represented the Chile national team against Aragon on 28 December 2006. Carlos Garrido Serrano (born 2 April 1994) is a Spanish footballer who plays for Andorran club Atlètic d'Escaldes as a central defender. Club career Born in Alcalá la Real, Jaén, Andalusia, Garrido joined Sevilla FC's youth setup in 2004 at the age of ten. He was promoted to the reserves ahead of the 2013–14 season, and made his debut on 30 August 2013 by starting in a 0–0 away draw against La Hoya Lorca CF. On 21 August 2015 Garrido moved to another reserve team, Sporting de Gijón B also in the third level. He scored his first senior goal on 25 March of the following year, but in a 2–6 home loss against CD Izarra.
