Carlos Sampaio Garrido
Carlos de Almeida Afonseca Sampaio Garrido (5 April 1883 – April 1960) was a Portuguese diplomat credited with saving the lives of approximately 1,000 Jews in Nazi-occupied Hungary while serving as Portugal's ambassador in Budapest between July and December 1944. Life and work He served as Minister Plenipotentiary and acting Ambassador of Portugal in Budapest from 1939-44. Along with Teixeira Branquinho, (Portuguese Chargé d'Affaires in Budapest in 1944) Garrido rented houses and apartments to shelter and protect refugees from deportation and murder. They obtained permission from the Portuguese government to issue safe conduct passes to all persons who had relatives in Portugal, Brazil, or the Portuguese colonies or had a connection to Portugal. Aristides De Sousa Mendes
Aristides de Sousa Mendes do Amaral e Abranches () Order of Christ (Portugal), GCC, Order of Liberty, OL (July 19, 1885 – April 3, 1954) was a Portuguese Consul (representative), consul during World War II. As the Portuguese consul-general in the French city of Bordeaux, he defied the orders of António de Oliveira Salazar's Estado Novo (Portugal), Estado Novo regime, issuing visas and passports to an undetermined number of refugees fleeing Nazi Germany, including Jews. For this, Sousa Mendes was punished by the Salazar regime with one year of inactivity with the right to one half of his rank's pay, being obliged subsequently to be retired. However, he ended up never being expelled from the foreign service nor forced to retire and he received a full consul salary until his death in 1954. The InterContinental Budapest Hotel is located on the Danube bank. History of the InterContinental Budapest The hotel was originally built as the Forum Hotel. Its construction was made possible by a favorable credit contract after an Austrian-Hungarian government agreement. Construction began in July 1979 based on the plans of the architect József Finta and the interior designer László Király.
