Carandiru (film)
''Carandiru'' is a 2003 drama film directed by Héctor Babenco. It is based on the memoir '' Estação Carandiru'' by Dr. Drauzio Varella. It follows Drauzio ( Luiz Carlos Vasconcelos), a physician and AIDS/HIV specialist, volunteering work in the Carandiru Penitentiary, the largest prison in Latin America, in São Paulo, shortly before the 1992 massacre, where 111 prisoners were killed by police forces. The film was shot on location, on the then deactivated prison, months before its demolition in 2002. Babenco stated that ''Carandiru'' is the "most realistic film e hasever made", presenting the film as a new kind of Brazilian realism inspired by Cinema Novo. Due to this focus on portraying reality and the film's memoir inspiration, ''Carandiru'' can be read as a docudrama or as a testimony from the prisoners. Héctor Babenco
Héctor Eduardo Babenco (February 7, 1946July 13, 2016) was an Argentine-Brazilian film director, screenwriter, producer and actor who worked in several countries including Brazil, Argentina, and the United States. He was one of the first Brazilian filmmakers to gain international critical acclaim, through his films which often dealt with social outcasts on the fringes of society. His best-known works include '' Pixote'' (1980), '' Kiss of the Spider Woman'' (1985), '' Ironweed'' (1987), '' At Play in the Fields of the Lord'' (1990) and '' Carandiru'' (2003). Caio Blat de Oliveira (born 2 June 1980) is a Brazilian actor. Biography Blat was born in São Paulo, Brazil. Carandiru Massacre
The Carandiru massacre (, ) occurred on 2 October 1992, in Carandiru Penitentiary in São Paulo, Brazil, when military police stormed the penitentiary following a prison riot. The massacre, which left 111 prisoners dead, is considered by many people to be a major human rights violation. Incident The incident was started by a prisoner revolt. At around 13:30 BRT (16:30 GMT), prison director José Ismael Pedrosa was warned that a fight had started between two groups in cell block 9 after a game of football. ''City of God'' () is a 2002 Brazilian epic crime film directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund. The screenplay, written by Bráulio Mantovani, is adapted from the 1997 novel by Paulo Lins, though the plot is also loosely based on real events. Abraccine Top 100 Brazilian Films
In 2015, the (Abraccine) published a list with the 100 best Brazilian films ever according to the votes of its members. This poll was the basis for a book named ''The 100 Best Brazilian Films'', published in 2016. The idea of the ranking and the book was suggested by publisher Letramento, with whom Abraccine and television network Canal Brasil co-released the book. The ranking was done based on individual lists done by Abraccine's 100 critics, who initially mentioned 379 films.
