Cara Tivey
Cara Tivey is an English pianist/keyboardist and vocalist who has mainly worked as a side musician. She is best known for her collaborations with Billy Bragg. Tivey is also the cousin of Stephen and Nick Duffy of The Lilac Time. Biography Cara Tivey joined Birmingham band Au Pairs as keyboard player in 1983, followed shortly after by the Fine Young Cannibals. In 1985 Tivey got her first recording break with Everything But the Girl on '' Baby the Stars Shine Bright''. In 1988, she started working with Billy Bragg on the '' Workers Playtime'' album, singing vocals on 'Must I Paint You A Picture'. She shared the bill with Bragg on the song "She's Leaving Home", which they recorded for the Beatles tribute ''Sgt. Pepper Knew My Father'' compilation. The song eventually reached number one in the UK Singles Chart as part of the double A side single along with Wet Wet Wet's "With a Little Help from My Friends". Piano
The piano is a stringed keyboard instrument in which the strings are struck by wooden hammers that are coated with a softer material (modern hammers are covered with dense wool felt; some early pianos used leather). William Bloke
''William Bloke'' is the seventh album by alternative folk artist Billy Bragg, released in September 1996, five years after his last studio album. It peaked at number 16 on the UK Albums Chart. The album's only single, "Upfield", reached number 46 on the UK Singles Chart in August 1996. The albums's title is a pun on the 18th-century English poet William Blake. Background After the release of 1991's '' Don't Try This at Home'', Billy Bragg became a father in 1993 and took time out to concentrate on fatherhood before recording ''William Bloke'' in 1996. Bragg has said that he saw the albums he made in the 1980s as "ideologically political" because that's how he viewed his country of Britain. ''Modern Life Is Rubbish'' is the second album by English alternative rock band Blur, released in May 1993. Although their debut album ''Leisure'' (1991) had been commercially successful, Blur faced a severe media backlash soon after its release, and fell out of public favour. After the group returned from an unsuccessful tour of the United States, poorly received live performances and the rising popularity of rival band Suede further diminished Blur's status in the UK. ''& Love for All'' is the third album by English band the Lilac Time and was released by Fontana Records in 1990. It saw the band move away from the folk pop sound of their first two albums towards an electric guitar and keyboard heavy sound indebted to 60's pop and psychedelia. Recording As a result of delays to the release of the Lilac Time's second album '' Paradise Circus'', the band had already begun working on ''& Love for All'' before that album was released in October 1989. Sessions for the album began at Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire, Wales, with Andy Partridge of XTC and the Dukes of Stratosphear producing. Partridge left the project mid-way through recording and was replaced by John Leckie, who recorded a further six tracks with the band. ''Don't Try This at Home'' is the sixth full-length album by urban folk artist Billy Bragg. "Sexuality" was released as a single which reached #27 on the UK charts and #2 on the U.S. Modern Rock charts. Johnny Marr of The Smiths co-wrote "Sexuality" and helped to produce two tracks. The song "Cindy of a Thousand Lives" is about photographer Cindy Sherman. "Tank Park Salute" is about his father, Dennis Bragg, who died of lung cancer when Bragg was 18. He said that for a show in Barking, where he grew up, he was so moved by the presence of his mother and brother in the audience that he kept a copy of the lyrics in case he forgot them while performing. R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe and Peter Buck contribute to "You Woke Up My Neighbourhood." The Internationale (album)
''The Internationale'' is a 1990 album by Billy Bragg. Originally released on Bragg's short-lived record label, Utility Records, it is a deliberately political album, consisting mainly of cover versions and rewrites of left-wing protest songs. Although Bragg is known for his association with left-wing causes, this release is unusual; most of Bragg's recordings balance overtly political songs with social observation and love songs. Versions The album was originally released as a seven-track EP in 1990. In 2006, as part of a planned series of reissues of albums in his back catalogue, ''The Internationale'' was remastered and reissued along with the seven tracks from 1988's ''Live & Dubious'' EP and five bonus tracks.
