Newham London Borough Council
Newham London Borough Council also known as Newham Council, is the local authority for the London Borough of Newham in Greater London, England. It is a London borough council, one of 32 in London. The council has been under Labour majority control since 1971. It has been led by a directly elected mayor since 2002. The council meets at both Newham Town Hall in East Ham and at the Old Town Hall, Stratford, and has its main offices at 1000 Dockside Road, overlooking the Royal Albert Dock. History The London Borough of Newham and its council were created under the London Government Act 1963, with the first election held in 1964. For its first year the council acted as a shadow authority alongside the area's outgoing authorities, principally being the two councils of the county boroughs of East Ham and West Ham, but also the borough councils of Woolwich (in respect of the North Woolwich area) and Barking (in respect of the Gallions Reach area). Rohit K Dasgupta
Rohit K. Dasgupta is an Associate Professor of Gender and Sexuality at the London School of Economics and Political Science and a British Labour Party politician. Prior to this he was a Senior Lecturer in the School of Culture and Creative Arts at the University of Glasgow where he remains as an Honorary Senior Research Fellow. In 2018 he was elected Councillor in the London Borough of Newham for the Canning Town South ward. He was re-elected for the same ward again in 2022. He contested the Parliamentary seat of East Hampshire for the Labour Party in 2017, coming second with an increase of 7% vote share. He is also Secretary of the Newham Branch of the Fabian Society. In 2019 he was selected as an MEP candidate for the South East region (5th on the list) but failed to get elected. Elections to Newham London Borough Council were held on 2 May 2002. The whole council was up for election. Turnout was 25.49%. Labour won all but one seat. The sole opposition councillor was Alan Craig of the Christian Peoples Alliance. The London Borough of Newham () is a London borough created in 1965 by the London Government Act 1963. It covers an area previously administered by the Essex county boroughs of West Ham and East Ham, authorities that were both abolished by the same act. The name Newham reflects its creation and combines the compass points of the old borough names. Situated in the Inner London part of East London, Newham has a population of 387,576, which is the fourth highest of the London boroughs and also makes it the 25th most populous district in England. The local authority is Newham London Borough Council.
