California Cup Classic
The California Cup Classic is an American thoroughbred horse race run annually at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California during its Oak Tree Racing Association meet in the fall of the year. It is raced over a distance of 1⅛ miles on dirt and is open to horses three-year-olds and up bred in the state of California. The event currently offers a purse of $250,000 and a trophy. The California Cup Classic is part of the "California Cup Day" series of races intended to call attention to, and to honor, the California Thoroughbred racing and breeding industry. Thoroughbred Horse Race
Thoroughbred racing is a sport and industry involving the racing of Thoroughbred horses. It is governed by different national bodies. There are two forms of the sport – flat racing and jump racing, the latter known as National Hunt racing in the UK and steeplechasing in the US. Michael Baze
Michael Carl Baze (April 14, 1987 – May 10, 2011) was an American Thoroughbred horse racing jockey. Family background He grew up in a family with an extensive history in the sport of racing. His father was a jockey who rode primarily at tracks in the Pacific Northwest and his uncle Gary Baze is a member of the Washington Racing Hall of Fame. Baze was also a cousin to jockey Tyler Baze and a second cousin to U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee Russell Baze. Riding career Baze obtained his jockey's license in 2003 and began riding in California before heading to the east coast of the United States later that year where he met with success at Monmouth Park Racetrack in New Jersey. Best Pal (February 12, 1988 – November 24, 1998) was an American Hall of Fame champion racehorse, who retired as the all time record for purses of any California-bred earning (since surpassed) for his owners, the Golden Eagle Farm, US$5.6 million over his lifetime. Background Best Pal was a brown gelding bred by John & Betty Mabee. Best Pal was a descendant of Princequillo on both his sire's and dam's line. He was gelded at an early age due to being "studdish and unmanageable". Racing career Best Pal won the first running of the Pacific Classic at Del Mar, and finished second in the 1991 Kentucky Derby. Sky Jack (foaled April 18, 1996 in California) is a retired American thoroughbred racehorse. Background Bred and raced by Rene and Margie Lambert, he was sired by Jaklin Klugman and out of the mare Sky Captive, a daughter of the 1986 Breeders' Cup Classic winner Skywalker. Racing career After a successful season in 2000, Sky Jack incurred a knee injury that required multiple surgeries. In addition, he suffered from bouts of colic, all of which kept him out of racing until September 2002. Having recovered from life-threatening illnesses, the gelding enjoyed his most successful season, winning the Grade II Mervyn Leroy Handicap and the Grade I Hollywood Gold Cup. McCann's Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal is an Irish brand of oatmeal that is sold internationally. It consists of steel-cut oats rather than rolled oats. History In 1800, John McCann built a mill at Beamond, County Meath, near Drogheda in Ireland. Russell Avery Baze (born 7 August 1958 ) is a retired horse racing jockey. He holds the record for the most race wins in North American horse racing history, and is a member of the United States Racing Hall of Fame and the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame. Rafael Bejarano
Rafael Bejarano (born June 23, 1982 in Arequipa, Peru) is a champion jockey in American Thoroughbred horse racing. He trained at the Peruvian national riding school before embarking on his professional career in 1999. Having met with success, including winning the apprentice riding title at Hipódromo de Monterrico in Lima, he emigrated to the United States in the spring of 2002 and settled in Louisville, Kentucky. He got his first win on July 10 that year at River Downs in Cincinnati, Ohio and went on to major race wins in Kentucky and on the New York Racing Association circuit. Tyler Baze
Tyler Baze (born October 19, 1982, in Seattle, Washington) is an American Champion jockey. He was born into a racing family, since both of his parents were jockeys, as is his uncle, Gary Baze. His second cousin is U.S. Racing Hall of Fame jockey Russell Baze. Baze began riding in Southern California in 1999 and earned his first victory on October 31 of that year. In 2000, he rode 246 winners and was voted the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey.
