Russell Baze
Russell Avery Baze (born 7 August 1958 ) is a retired Canadian-American Thoroughbred horse race, horse racing jockey. He holds the record for the most race wins in North American horse racing history, and is a member of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, United States Racing Hall of Fame and the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame. Family background Born to an United States, American family, Baze's father, Joe Baze, is a former jockey and horse trainer, trainer who was competing at Hastings Racecourse, Exhibition Park in Vancouver at the time of his birth giving him dual Canadian/American citizenship. Jockey
A jockey is someone who rides horses in horse racing or steeplechase (horse racing), steeplechase racing, primarily as a profession. The word also applies to camel riders in camel racing. The word "jockey" originated from England and was used to describe the individual who rode horses in racing. They must be light, typically around a weight of 100–120 lb. (45–55 kg), and physically fit. They are typically self-employed, and are paid a small fee from the horse trainer, whose colors they wear while competing in a race. The Oklahoma Derby is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for three years olds, over a distance of miles (9 furlongs) on the dirt held annually late September at Remington Park located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The event currently carries an offered purse of $400,000. History The inaugural running of the event was on 18 March 1989 as the Remington Park Derby held over the miles distance and was won by the Oklahoma bred Clever Trevor in a time 1:43.00. Clever Trevor would later win the Grade I Arlington Classic and Remington Park would have a Black Type Stakes named after him. The event was moved to the late summer, early fall schedule in 1997. Sunshine Millions Classic
The Sunshine Millions Classic is an American race for thoroughbred horses held annually in January at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California and at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. Part of the eight-race Sunshine Millions series, half of the races are run at one track, and half at the other. The "Classic" is open to horses four-years-old and older willing to race one and one-eighth miles on the dirt. It is a restricted event currently offering a purse of $250,000. The Sunshine Millions series races are restricted to horses bred either in Florida or in California. Lost In The Fog Stakes
The Lost in the Fog Stakes was an American ungraded Thoroughbred horse race held at Golden Gate Fields in Albany, California. It was named in honor of Lost in the Fog, the brilliant sprinter who made his name between 2004 and 2006 before dying of lymphoma at age four. First run in 2007, the race was a five-furlong sprint for two-year-old horses until 2014 when it was opened to older horses, aged four and up, and run at a distance of six furlongs. During the summer of 2007, the racetrack installed a polymer synthetic type racing surface as mandated by the California Horse Racing Board. The Tapeta Footings synthetic all-weather racing surface is designed to make racing safer for both horses and riders. With the closure of the racetrack, the 2023 race would be its final edition. The California Oaks is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in February at Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley, California. Open to three-year-old fillies, it is contested on Tapeta Footings synthetic dirt over a distance of a mile and a sixteenth (8.5 furlongs). The event is an ungraded stakes race with a current purse of $75,000 and has been a prep race to the Triple Tiara of Thoroughbred Racing, including the Kentucky Oaks, the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes and Mother Goose Stakes. The Aristides Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for four-year-olds and older over a distance of six furlongs on the dirt scheduled annually in late May or early June at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The event currently offers a purse of $275,000. History The Aristides Stakes is named in honor of the racehorse Aristides who won the inaugural Kentucky Derby in 1875 on the Churchill Downs track.
