CHNS-FM (89.9 MHz) is a commercial FM radio station, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The station airs a classic hits radio format branded as ''89.9 The Wave''. CHNS is owned and operated by the Maritime Broadcasting System which also owns sister station CHFX-FM. CHNS-FM's studios and offices are located on Lovett Lake Court in Halifax. The transmitter is located on Washmill Lake Drive in Clayton Park. History CHNS was Nova Scotia's first radio station, signing on the air on May 12, 1926, originally on 930 AM. In 1930, it switched to 910 but switched back to 930 four years later. In 1941, it switched to 960. It was the host of Canadian National Railway radio "phantom station" CNRH until that network was disbanded. CHNS was an affiliate of the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission from 1933 to 1936 when the network became the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. CJCH-FM (101.3 MHz) is a commercial radio station in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The station broadcasts a Top 40/CHR format branded on-air as ''101.3 Virgin Radio'', and is owned by Bell Media. CJCH's studios and offices are located at the intersection of Russell and Agricola streets in Halifax (behind TV sister station CJCH-DT). The transmitter is located on Washmill Lake Drive in Clayton Park. History AM early years (1944-1978) The station was established on November 14, 1944 by '' The Halifax Chronicle'' at 1320 AM. It was the second radio station to sign on in Halifax, after CHNS, which was founded in 1926. The Dominion Network was the second English-language radio network of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation from January 1, 1944 to 1962. It consisted of the CBC-owned CJBC radio station in Toronto and a series of 34 privately owned affiliates from coast-to-coast. The Dominion Network was set up as a complementary network to the CBC's main English service which became known as the Trans-Canada Network. CBHA-FM is a Canadian radio station. It is the CBC Radio One affiliate in Halifax, Nova Scotia, broadcasting at 90.5 MHz. It is the flagship CBC Radio One station for the Maritime provinces. CBHA's studios are located on 7067 Chebucto Road in Halifax, while its transmitter is located on Washmill Lake Drive in Clayton Park. History The station was launched in 1944 on 1240 AM with the call sign CBH. Prior to its launch, CBC Radio programming aired on private affiliate CHNS and its shortwave relay CHNX 6.13 MHz (in the 49m band). Michael Dennis Duffy (born May 27, 1946) is a former Canadian senator and former Canadian television journalist. Prior to his appointment to the upper house in 2008, he was the Ottawa editor for CTV News Channel. In turning 75 on May 27, 2021, Duffy retired from the senate due to mandatory retirement rules. Early life Mike Duffy was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island to Lillian and Wilfrid Duffy. Cyril Knowlton Nash (November 18, 1927 – May 24, 2014) was a Canadian journalist, author and news anchor. He was senior anchor of CBC Television's flagship news program, '' The National'' from 1978 until his retirement in 1988. He began his career in journalism by selling newspapers on the streets of Toronto during World War II. Before age 20, he was a professional journalist for British United Press. After some time as a freelance foreign correspondent, he became the CBC's Washington correspondent during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, also covering stories in South and Central America and Vietnam.
