Mei-mei Berssenbrugge (; born October 5, 1947, in Beijing, China) is a contemporary poet. Winner of two American Book Awards, her work is often associated with the Language School, the poetry of the New York School, phenomenology, and visual art. She is married to the painter Richard Tuttle, with whom she has frequently collaborated. Personal life Berssenbrugge was born in Beijing to Chinese and Dutch-American parents. Her mother was an educated mathematician, and her American father was born to first-generation Dutch emigrants. She grew up near Boston, Massachusetts, and was educated starting at Barnard College of Columbia University, then transferring to Reed College, where she earned a B.A. in 1969. Robert Kelly (born September 24, 1935) is an American poet associated with the deep image group. He was named the first Dutchess County poet laureate 2016-2017. Early life and education Kelly was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Samuel Jason and Margaret Rose Kelly ''née'' Kane. In 1935, he studied at the City College of the City University of New York, graduating with a degree in 1955. He then spent three years at Columbia University. Teaching career Kelly has worked as a translator and teacher, most notably at Bard College, where he has worked since 1961. Peter Blue Cloud (Aroniawenrate) (1933 – 2011) was a Kahnawakeronon poet, and folklorist. Early life He was born June 10, 1933, of the Turtle Clan of the Mohawk Nation on the Caughnawaga Reserve in Kahnawake, Quebec, Canada. He was previously associated with the journal ''Akwesasne Notes'' and the journal ''Indian Magazine''. His Christian name was Peter Williams but he went by Peter Blue Cloud. The name Aroniawenrate as a nickname has been translated in English as "Stepping across the Blue Sky" or "Climbing up toward the Blue Sky". Peter Blue Cloud had pen names of Coyote 2, Owl's Child, Turtle's Son, and Kaienwaktatsie. Miguel Algarín Jr. (11 September 1941 – 30 November 2020) was a Puerto Rican poet, writer, co-founder of the Nuyorican Poets Café, and a Rutgers University professor of English. Early years Algarín was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, and grew up in a culturally rich household that fostered a deep appreciation for the arts. In 1950, he and his family migrated to the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City, where he completed both his primary and secondary education. Helen Adam (December 2, 1909 in Glasgow, Scotland – September 19, 1993 in New York City) was a Scottish poet, collagist and photographer who was part of a literary movement contemporaneous to the Beat Generation that occurred in San Francisco during the 1950s and 1960s. Though often associated with the Beat poets, she would more accurately be considered one of the predecessors of the Beat Generation. Alta Gerrey (May 22, 1942 – March 10, 2024) was a British-American poet, prose writer, and publisher, best known as the founder of the feminist press Shameless Hussy Press and editor of the ''Shameless Hussy Review''.
