Burdale, North Yorkshire
Burdale is a hamlet in North Yorkshire, England, south-east of Malton. It lies in a deep valley (or dale), also known as Burdale, in the Yorkshire Wolds. It is the site of a deserted medieval village. Burdale was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, when there were 43 villagers, a mill and two churches. In the 14th century Burdale appears to have been of a reasonable size, significantly larger than its more famous neighbour, Wharram Percy. By the 17th century the village was much reduced. Between 1853 and 1950 Burdale had its own railway station, on the Malton and Driffield Junction Railway. Between 1925 and 1955 a large chalk quarry operated at Burdale, and supplied much of the traffic for the railway. Burdale was part of the ancient parish of Wharram Percy in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It formed part of the township of Raisthorpe and Burdale, which became a civil parish in 1866. The Malton and Driffield Junction Railway, later known as the ''Malton and Driffield branch'' was a railway line in Yorkshire that ran between the towns of Malton, North Yorkshire and Driffield in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The line was formally opened on 19 May 1853 with full public services starting on 1 June 1853. It became part of the North Eastern Railway (United Kingdom), North Eastern Railway (1854), then London and North Eastern Railway (1923), becoming part of British Railways in 1948. Passenger services on the line gained the nickname the ''Malton Dodger''. Between the 1920s and 1950s the line saw use transporting chalk from the Burdale and Wharram quarries. The North Eastern Railway (NER) was an England, English rail transport, railway company. It was incorporated in 1854 by the combination of several existing railway companies. Later, it was amalgamated with other railways to form the London and North Eastern Railway at the Railways Act 1921, Grouping in 1923. Burdale Tunnel is a former railway tunnel on the abandoned Malton and Driffield Junction Railway (MDR) in North Yorkshire, England. Construction of the tunnel began in 1847, but suffered financial difficulties and building was not complete until 1853. The line was closed completely a hundred years later in 1958, but the tunnel was still being used by members of the public, so the portals were bricked up in 1961. During 1970s and 1980s, there were collapses inside the tunnel and in 2009 the restoration of the passenger line could not continue due to the damage. Yorkshire Wolds Railway
The Yorkshire Wolds Railway is a preserved railway in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is located on a section of the Malton and Driffield Junction Railway near the village of Fimber. The railway has a short demonstration line and an operational industrial diesel locomotive that provides cab rides to visitors. The railway has plans for expansion, work on which has been underway since April 2019. History The line was built as part of a scheme supported by George Hudson to create a line of communication from Hull to Newcastle. The line opened on 19 May 1853; its traffic was almost exclusively local passenger trains and freight traffic from the quarries at Burdale and Wharram, with the occasional summer Sunday services to the coast. Wharram railway station was opened by the Malton and Driffield Railway in May 1853, serving the village of Wharram-le-Street in North Yorkshire, England, although the area was in the East Riding of Yorkshire at the time. The station was also near the deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy and adjacent to Wharram chalk quarry. The single platform station had a passing loop off its southern end, the only one on the line. It had the customary goods facilities for wayside stations, plus a siding into Wharram Quarry, dominated by a large chalk silo. It was sited between the villages of Sledmere and Fimber. It was closed to passengers on 5 June 1950 but remained open for goods traffic until 20 October 1958.
