Burbage Brook is an upper tributary stream of the River Derwent in the Peak District of England. Toponymy The origin of the name is thought to derive from the Germanic ''baki'' for creek. Course White Path Moss The source of the brook is on moorland to the north of the brook's valley in Derbyshire where it drains the land south of Friar's Ridge on White Path Moss, close to Stanage Edge. Burbage Valley Within the first kilometre the altitude of the brook falls just over 60 metres from 396 to 335 metres above sea level. The water enters Burbage Valley and Sheffield at the Upper Burbage Bridge (). It then flows through the Burbage valley and the remains of Burbage conifer plantation, which included Lodgepole pine, Scots pine and Japanese larch. This was planted by Sheffield City Council between 1968 and 1971 with an outline designed to represent Great Britain when viewed from the air. Burbage, Derbyshire
Burbage is a village in Derbyshire and was a parish until 1961, when it became part of the parish of Buxton. At the 2011 Census Burbage was a ward of the High Peak Borough Council. The population taken at this Census was 2,540. Burbage is well known for its brass band, the Burbage Band (Buxton). Burbage backs onto Grinlow Woods to the south and provides access to Solomon's Temple. Burbage Edge overlooks the settlement from the west. Burbage Tunnel (now blocked) is a remnant of the Cromford and High Peak Railway, which operated from 1831 to 1967, although the section near Burbage was abandoned in the 1890s in favour of a new alignment via Buxton. History The village's name means 'valley/brook with a fortification'. Leofric, Earl of Mercia, gave the village of Burbage to Coventry Abbey in 1043. At that time it was valued at two shillings. By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, its value had risen to £4. There were 1¼ hides of land (around ) with two ploughs. Twenty villagers held two smallholdings, with two slaves and eight ploughs. Burbage also had a meadow, measuring a furlong in length and width (about 40,500 square metres). Burbage is a village and civil parish in the Vale of Pewsey, Wiltshire, England. It is about south of Marlborough and west of Newbury. The parish includes the hamlets of Durley, Eastcourt, Marr Green, Ram Alley, Stibb Green, The Warren (which is close to Tottenham House), and Westcourt.
