United Soccer League (1984–85)
The United Soccer League was a professional soccer league in the United States in the mid-1980s. History As the second incarnation of the American Soccer League was crumbling, five of the eight ASL teams (Carolina Lightnin', renamed the Charlotte Gold, Dallas Americans, Jacksonville Tea Men, Oklahoma City Slickers, renamed Stampede, and Rochester Flash) left to founded the USL. They also took the ASL's commissioner, William Burfeind, with them as their first commissioner. Fiscal responsibility, regional rivalries and measured expansion were a few of the cornerstones on which the organization was to be structured. A league rule allowed only four of eighteen roster spots be taken by foreign players. In addition a salary cap was imposed on member clubs. Initially, the league was to have both indoor and outdoor seasons so that clubs could play year round. All-High Stadium
All-High Stadium (Robert E. Rich All-High Stadium) is a football stadium in Buffalo, New York. It was opened in 1926, and received a Memorial Day dedication on May 29, 1929. The stadium was modeled after classic European soccer stadiums of the time. It is part of the Bennett High School complex. It is bounded by the high school and Main Street to the northwest, Manhattan Avenue to the northeast, Hill Street to the southeast, and Mercer Avenue to the southwest. History Filming The stadium was used in the filming of a key scene in '' The Natural'', a 1984 film set in the 1930s, as a stand-in for Wrigley Field in Chicago, which was unavailable. Although there is some ivy along the walls suggesting Wrigley, the upper deck in the outfield is more suggestive of Chicago's other major ballpark of that era, Comiskey Park. Rudy Pikuzinski
Rudy Pikuzinski (born August 9, 1959) is a former U.S. soccer Forward (association football), forward who spent most of his career playing indoor soccer. He was a three time American Indoor Soccer Association Most Valuable Player, MVP and served as an assistant coach his last year as a player. Youth Pikuzinski, and his brother Randy Pikuzinski, Randy, grew up in Buffalo, New York where they learned to play from their father. Pikuzinski attended Bishop Turner High School and The Park School of Buffalo, The Park School, playing soccer at both. Pikuzinski set the single season scoring record at The Park School. He also played with the White Eagles of the Western New York Premier Soccer League, winning four championships. Otto Orf
Otto E. Orf II (born November 4, 1963) is a retired American soccer goalkeeper who played professionally in the United Soccer League and Major Indoor Soccer League and National Professional Soccer League. He played one game for the U.S. at the 1996 FIFA Futsal World Championship. Player Orf first played soccer his sophomore year at Iroquois Central High School, trying out for goalkeeper because nobody else was interested in that position. By his senior season, he was the team MVP. Orf attended SUNY Buffalo where he played both baseball and soccer. His baseball career ended with an elbow injury his sophomore season. In 1984, he left SUNY Buffalo before his senior season to turn professional with the Buffalo Storm of the United Soccer League. The release by the Storm of their starting goalkeeper following financial difficulties brought about Orf signing on for $50 per week. Carlos Salguero
Carlos Salguero (10 June 1955 – 26 December 2006) was an Argentina, Argentine professional association football, football forward (association football), forward. He died aged 51 from cancer in 2006. He spent one season in the North American Soccer League (1968–1984), North American Soccer League, one in the United Soccer League (1984–85), United Soccer League and nearly ten in various indoor leagues.
