Britsum
Britsum is a village in the municipality of Leeuwarden (province of Friesland), in the Netherlands. Britsum was built on an artificial bank (''terp'') running along the eastern side of the former ''Middelzee''. The church, built around 1300, is also located on this bank. It had a population of about 910 citizens in January 2017. History It was first mentioned in 944 as Bruggiheim, and means "settlement near a bridge". Britsum is a ''terp'' (artificial living mound) village with a radial structure. It dates from the early middle ages and was built near the Middelzee. A large part of the mound was excavated around 1900. The western side of the Dutch Reformed church dates between 1180 and 1200. The nave and choir date between 1240 and 1260. The church received its present shape in 1875. In 1840, Britsum was home to 326 people. Leeuwarden
Leeuwarden (; ; ; ) is a List of cities in the Netherlands by province, city and Municipalities of the Netherlands, municipality in Friesland, Netherlands, with a population of 127,073 (2023). A ''terp'', also known as a ''wierde, woerd, warf, warft, werf, werve, wurt'' or ''værft'', is an artificial dwelling mound found on the North European Plain that has been created to provide safe ground during storm surges, high tides and sea or river flooding. The various terms used reflect the regional dialects of the North European region. These mounds occur in the coastal parts of the Netherlands (in the provinces of Zeeland, Friesland and Groningen (province), Groningen), in southern parts of Denmark and in the north-western parts of Germany where, before Dyke (construction), dykes were made, floodwater interfered with daily life. North Friesland Railway
The Noord-Friesche Locaalspoorweg-Maatschappij (North Friesland Railway) was a railway serving the sparsely populated province of Friesland in northern Netherlands. Operated by the North Friesland Local Railway Company (Dutch: ''Noord-Friesche Locaalspoorweg-Maatschappij'' (NFLS)), it functioned as a light railway. Middelzee
The Middelzee (Dutch language, Dutch for "middle sea"; ), also called Bordine, was the estuary mouth of the River Boorne (West Frisian: ''Boarn'') now in the Netherlands, Dutch province of Friesland. It ran from as far south as Sneek northward to the Wadden Sea and marked the border between main Frisians, Frisian regions of Westergoa (Westergo) and Eastergoa (Oostergo). Choir (architecture)
A choir, also sometimes called quire, is the area of a church or cathedral that provides seating for the clergy and church choir. It is in the western part of the chancel, between the nave and the sanctuary, which houses the altar and Church tabernacle. In larger medieval churches it contained choir-stalls, seating aligned with the side of the church, so at right-angles to the seating for the congregation in the nave.
