Brazilian Submarine Force Command
The Brazilian Submarine Force Command (ComForS; ), is the submarine, submarine force of the Brazilian Navy. Mission The force's command mission is to ensure the readiness of subordinate means, establish rules and procedures and exercise operational control of submarines at sea and of diving activities in the Brazilian Navy, in order to contribute to the effectiveness of the employment of subordinate naval resources in the application of naval power. History The idea of a new weapon for naval warfare was developed in the late 19th century. The first plans to submarine forces was created by the first lieutenant Felinto Perry in his works published in periodicals at the time, were reason for reflection and wide discussion, arousing public interest and motivating the senior naval administration. Submarines
A submarine (often shortened to sub) is a watercraft capable of independent operation underwater. (It differs from a submersible, which has more limited underwater capability.) The term "submarine" is also sometimes used historically or informally to refer to remotely operated vehicles and robots, or to medium-sized or smaller vessels (such as the midget submarine and the wet sub). Submarines are referred to as ''boats'' rather than ''ships'' regardless of their size. Although experimental submarines had been built earlier, submarine design took off during the 19th century, and submarines were adopted by several navies. They were first used widely during World War I (1914–1918), and are now used in many navies, large and small. Their military uses include: attacking enemy surface ships (merchant and military) or other submarines; aircraft carrier protection; blockade running; nuclear deterrence; stealth operations in denied areas when gathering intelligence and doing ...

SSK (hull Classification Symbol)
SSK was the United States Navy hull classification symbol for a diesel-electric submarine specialized for anti-submarine duties. SS indicated that the vessel was a submarine, and the K suffix that it was a hunter-killer. The United States Navy does not currently operate any submarines of this type, and so the designation is inactive. History The start of the Cold War in the mid-1940s and the threat of Soviet submarines in the Atlantic led several Western navies to build or adapt submarines to specialize in hunting other submarines. The changes included streamlining to make them quieter and improved acoustic sensors. This type of vessel was given the classification SSK in United States service. Due to tactical and financial considerations resulting from nuclear propulsion these changes were eventually incorporated into all submarines, allowing the SSK role to be subsumed into the regular attack submarine role and the classification became obsolete. Submarine Development Program
The Submarine Development Program (PROSUB) is a partnership signed between Brazil and France in 2008, with the objective of Technology transfer, transferring technology for the Manufacturing, manufacture of military vessels. It is a component of the Brazil's Defense Strategy to develop the country's naval power with the production of four conventional submarines (diesel-electric propulsion) and the first Brazilian Nuclear submarine, nuclear-powered submarine. The program will make Brazil one of the few countries to have Nuclear power, nuclear technology, alongside the United States, Russia, France, the United Kingdom, China, and India. Although the program began in 2008 with the goal of providing the Brazilian Navy with a "large naval force," it dates back to the 1970s when the Navy began seeking to master nuclear energy. In order to shorten the development time of such a program, Brazil sought partners in other countries in the hope of establishing a partnership in which technolo ...

Riachuelo-class Submarine
The ''Riachuelo'' class are a Brazilian class of diesel-electric and nuclear-powered attack submarines developed by the state-owned shipyard Itaguaí Construções Navais, based on the French as part of the Submarine Development Program. History In 2008, the Presidents of Brazil and France, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Nicolas Sarkozy, signed a strategic partnership to the construction of four conventionally-powered submarines, and the support for the development of the first Brazilian nuclear submarine, in a program called PROSUB. The project was initiated in 2010 with the Madeira Island base in Rio de Janeiro as the submarine development and manufacturing point. Between 2010 and 2012, a group of 31 engineers, 25 officers and 6 civil employees, received theoretical training by the DCNS in Cherbourg, France. In 2018, more than 400 Brazilian engineers worked only on the nuclear submarine project staff, originally formed by the group that received training in France. The first ...
